Well, the latest to jump on the 3D bandwagon is this movie. Without a change in the release date, Paramount plans to convert The Last Airbender to 3D. Here's what the movie's VFX supervisor Pablo Hellman had to say about the conversion process.

"You can probably spend as much time as you have," he told us. "How good it looks is proportionate to how much time that you spend either if you decide to shoot it in 3D or you decide to do it in post. I think the one thing that you have to remember is to design things (for 3D). If you have not designed it in 3D, you have to have a specific aesthetic to it, and having seen 'Clash of the Titans,' this movie is different in the sense that Night's takes are really, really long. The average shot is about 500 frames, which is really long, and the camera movement, even in action scenes, there's a lot of stuff we shot at 96 frames a second just so we can speed it up or slow it down. The camera moves really slowly around the characters. That kind of design lends itself well to 3D dimensionalizing more than an action sequence that's all cuts; you just can't focus on things. A lot of it has to do with design and what you do with it, too. It's what we do with the tool that makes it either interesting or jarring and not telling the story."

So he's basically saying the 3D will suck, and there's little he can do about it, given the time for release.

Too bad Night has lost his cred with recent films -- I am sure he would have tried to block this if he had more power, pre-LADY IN THE WATER.

There is a really easy solution. Punish the studios for their greed by watching it in 2D not on 3D. It should be a rule of thumb unless the film is worthy of a 3D like Avatar or How to Train Your Dragon, but an obvious cash grab like this one or Clash of the Titans should not fool anyone.

Initial reports are not kind at all, Ebert called it "An agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.".

The AP reviewer Christy Lemire called it: " a joyless, soulless, muddled mess, but the worst part of all doesn't come until the very end. That's when it makes the clear suggestion that two more such movies are in store for us.
Hopefully, that won't happen.."

So far it has got 8 bad reviews out of 8 on Rotten Tomatoes. It is a shame because the trailer was somehow promising, and what also bad about is that it was supposed to be the film that makes Shyamalan relevant again.
