DVD Releases in India to use DivX

DivX has announced today that they have secured a partnership with India based UTV to distribute DVD media containing DivX encoded movies. DivX who are the digital entertainment company that produce their namesake file format, will license the technology that allows a distributor to encode several high-quality and secure movies onto a single disc. The main drawback of such a technique is playback devices (such as DVD players) must be DivX-certified in order to read and understand these discs.

Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV said "As new technologies emerge to give consumers greater control and more choices in viewing entertainment content, UTV is very happy to partner with DivX. Distributing our content in the DivX format will give our consumers more options. Our goal is to enable our users to enjoy more content, quality and value in entertainment whenever and wherever they choose."

Whilst Aparna Vashisht-Rota, Business Development, at DivX, Inc. commented, "By partnering with UTV, DivX can continue to expand and reach the global community in effort to create and build a better media future for consumers everywhere."

UTV concentrate their movie distribution business within India, holding the rights to hundreds of titles from both Bollywood and Hollywood. The first titles to be released on DivX DVDs include: The Myth, Swades, Main Meri Patni Aur Woh, Sin City, Unleashed and Pulp Fiction

"There's this whole school of thought that movies are always so great when you're 10 or 12 years old, and the reality of it is, when you're 10 or 12 years old, you've only seen 100 stories. By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

This is quite interesting. I don't think UTV is gonna get much of sales from this - whatever their means, they cannot go cheaper than the pirated DVDs. And It'll just make it easier for the pirates to produce copies of Divx discs.

Plus - this also means that India is still no where closer to normalize value-adds in their DVDs (Making of/Behind The Scenes/etc). I'll have to wait longer for a worthwhile release of Andaz Apna Apna Sad

well, the point is the format is getting wider acceptance. More market play. Also, if they develop DRM technology, might even hinder ppl from copying the files. Which would mean studio's would push for that format since it would reduce piracy in a way. Though there will always be a script kiddie out there trying to finger dvd's and divx's to break open the DRM and manage to copy it anyways Grin
