I appreciate the enthusiam for this little nifty feature. But, let us remind ourselves that brands like Elektra usually have low video DACs in order to keep their prices down. They compensate on the lower resolution by offering PC-related extensions, such as the one cited above. In my mind, anything below 12-bit/ 108Mhz is not worth any number of add-ons.

But if you don't care much about resolution (what's wrong with you?), then it shouldn't matter.

While AK might be right, I can't say for sure.

The cost of the player is not cheaper than the others in the market, AK's recommendation of Phlips was 200-something, and the other products I saw of more well known companies also had that price range. So, this player is actually more expensive.

But the USB & memory drive was too much of an attraction for me not to get it.

We have to realize that we get DiVX players usually for convenience anyway. Because DIVX quality does not match DVD quality, but we might use DIVX,because we sacrifice quality for convenience. Now, I cant say if this player matches Phlips or not, since the Phlips one is a year old, so maybe a company like Elekta just came in and stole the technology, and added something new.

For me, the convenience was important. I came home from work today, and wanted to watch Heroes, so I just downloaded it to my Flash driver, and plugged the flash driver in the player.

Its around 300-something, and its model "ehdmi-820", and you can check it out at E-Max in Sharjah (a cool place, by the way!)

Then again, I cant find any info on this model on the internet, except an Arabic forum thread, so proceed with caution!

I just realized the TV isnt as clear as it should have been. Is it because of the cables? Should i use a different cable aside from the audio/video cable?

The regular red/white/yellow AV cables should be fine. If the resolution is not clear, you first need to check out the settings on your LCD, then try to match optimal output on your great (huff, huff!) Elektra DVD player.

The best way to test the picture quality is to use two different original DVDs for comparison (ie, if you have original DVDs; huff, huff!).

If all of the above fails, then try a different DVD player. If the situation remains the same, then, may be, your LCD is at fault. At least this narrows down the possibilities.

I figured it out!

I was using a simple A/V cable. So what I did was get another A/V cable, and stick it in the COMPONENT part of the LCD and the PLAYER.

The quality shot up.

Which one did you get? Was it a gold-plated A/V cable or a dedicated *Component Video* cable?

Coincidentally, I was looking at some Component Video cables only today. The MONSTER cables are a bit on the expensive side, but they're the best. There's a 2m THX Certified one for AED 145, and the 1m MONSTER Standard is AED 99. The Audio component cable comes separately for around AED 80.

I actually just used a normal A/V cable as a component one. An A/V cable has three wires, so I used all three for the video. It worked.

Which is better, HMI or Component?

Almost all DVD players have Component. You can use HDMI cable if your DVD player outs HD. Then your LCD will need to have HDMI (1080i/1080p). To answer your question, HDMI is on a totally different level than Component; it's high definition as opposed to analog. But to take the full advantage of this technology, you either need a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player. And, finally, start buying hi-def software.

did u try with an SVHS cable ? this is supposed to give better quality for the vid then component.
You will still need component for audio. Try the SPDIF option though if u have it and dont want to use anything else.

I'm just outputting from my PC to my plasma anyways. The DVD/divx is hooked using a component since my old nakamichi stereo reciever wont take svhs Sad

dont invest in HDMI yet. Too much of new hype. AK's right about the Blueray / HD thingie. LG is already out with a dual burner, so hopefully (cross fingers) we should have a dual player. That would be a good investment. but thats about 8 months to a year.....dont expect anything sooooon

I've gotten used to HDMI now, just as a habit, it seems to be a tiny bit better than component, so everything is fine now.
