With all the cupids flying about today, I thought a little counter-programming might be in order!

Like all lists, this one is highly subjective and personal. But, it’s a fun little thing I thought I’d do; you know, one for the cynics, and a tight slap in the pink faces of incredulous lovers everywhere today. (Yes, thank you, I love you too).

Feel free to mention other possible candidates for the Best Anti-Valentine’s Day Movies Ever. Make your own list right here!

Deep, deep in our (pink) little hearts, we know we hate Valentine’s Day.

It’s a time when men and women go a little mad: massive amounts of chocolates and cheap diamonds and roses and men’s cologne and whatever-else is exchanged; all in the name of that thing called love (or sex). Valentine’s Day is also a time when many of you watch mushy romances and comedies.

Admit to yourself — no one is looking — its torture, isn’t it? We understand your pain.

Here’s a list of five Anti-Valentine Day’s movies that will bring much joy and satisfaction to the cynic in you...continue reading »

Ak..no fair. You've only listed movies that have a review.

My top nomination would go to the brilliant, utterly depressing story of failed, failed, failed love:

Jude

Actually, they all fit my selection criteria below.

   1. It must be a great film; no fluffy, mediocre stuff
   2. It must be depressing; in fact, the more the better
   3. It must be devoid of the stereotypical romance; in real life love is of a varied kind, and it hurts; so should this film

Like I said earlier, everyone will have their own reasons for the films. Let's have some nominations, guys.

I also want to add that I didn't just want to pick movies about 'doomed love.' That would be too easy. Instead I thought about movies that meditate on a different kind of love; a more warped, twisted view of romance...something that shatters the concept of passion and sincerity and tenderness.

Has to be

The Royal Tenenbaums

This is one tragi-comedy everyone hates to love or is it the other way.

oh - the movie that hurt the most when speaking of love: Requiem for a Dream! What a great depressing piece.

Ha ha, nice one, this just missed my list, landing at #6! I thought "Requiem" was a great candidate because its not a story of love between a man and a woman (or beast, depending on your persuasion).

It's a story of humans in love with DRUGS!

Wouldn't it be great to have a Happy St. Stoner's Day?

In that case Oldboy should top the list...

It would have been more unconventional for us, if we decided to do a Pro-Valentine list.

AK, I have realized you have included one of Lodge H. Kerrigan's films. I'd actually go ahead, and include "Keane" and "Cleane, Shaven" too. Both movies that are about an unstable man's love for his child.
