Remember Billy Ray? (No, no, not Jimmy Ray, he's still working hard on a comeback with his buddy Vanilla Ice and his other one-hit wonder pals).

Billy Ray is the writer-director of the surprisingly good "Shattered Glass." Here's a better introduction: He's the guy who managed to get that turnip Hayden Christensen to act.

"Breach" is his new movie, and the story's very interesting. I've heard an interview in which Ray was asked why he chose to do another movie about deception. His answer (I paraphrase from memory): "I'm always interested in duplicity...its easy to write a screenplay about liars because the audience knows there's subtext to everything the character says or does."

Chris Cooper plays a sexual deviant and the most high-profile Russian spy in American who was brought down by his rookie partner, our very own Ryan Phillippe.  And there’s also Laura Linney who some of us here want to fuck in the ass. But, I digress…

To tell a story about a real life criminal is not a easy thing. You need to have your facts right so that you can convince the audience that this guy was really mean and menacing. Well atleast that is what I thought.

In Breach, Chris Cooper plays an undercover Russian Spy working for the Americans. Well the FBI and all other secret service agencies are aware of it but they need solid proof to bring this guy down. That is where and why Ryan Phillippe steps in. He plays the rookie to the T. His task is the get whatever he can off Cooper so that the FBI can take him down. But that is the real problem and where the movie starts. Story of spying. deception, lies, more lies, a dash of truth, and 0 amount of sex.

Spy movies are supposed to be this way, not something like James Bond. It should be quiet, subtle yet creating an impact.
Director Ray and his cinematographer use a claustrophobic scene here that no fictional spy movie would tolerate: flat fluorescent-lit FBI corridors, Cooper’s bare and basic office (Ashcroft's picture on one wall, a crucifix on the other), Philippe’s dull apartment. No F/X just plain old suspense.

Overall, this Breach is about as good as the spy genre gets.

p.s.- I would still do Laura Linney.

Her character was lonely: "Look around. I don't even have a cat."

Poor woman. I'm sure a bunch of us here would be glad to volunteer as understanding husbands.
