We were talking about Tom Cruise's next project on Friday. Here it is -

The political drama Lions for Lambs revolves around a platoon of soldiers in Afghanistan. Tom Cruise stars as a U.S. Senator while Meryl Streep takes the role of a journalist. Robert Redford directs and acts with the script written by Matthew Carnahan. Michael Pena also stars.

Nothing more is available on this yet unless someone has read the book and wants to dish out more info.

Variety

Derek Luke is set to star in "Lions for Lambs," the Robert Redford-directed drama for United Artists.

He joins a cast that includes Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Redford and Michael Pena.

Shooting begins later this month on the first film since United Artists was relaunched under the control of Cruise and partner Paula Wagner.

Luke plays one of two soldiers who find themselves cut off from their platoon in unfriendly territory in Afghanistan. They become the catalyst for several intersecting storylines.

Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote the script.

Bring on the Oscars for Mr. Cruise.

Quote
MGM will bow United Artists' first production, "Lions for Lambs," nationwide on Nov. 9. Helmed by Robert Redford, the multilayered drama starring Meryl Streep, UA co-head Tom Cruise and Redford will bow opposite the Warner Bros. Pictures comedy "Fred Claus."

Principal photography on the film began Jan. 29. Based on an original screenplay from Matthew Michael Carnahan, "Lions" is being produced by Carnahan, Redford, Tracy Falco and Andrew Hauptman.

"Robert Redford has a remarkable ability to tell moving stories and capture the essence of the human experience," United Artists CEO Paula Wagner said. "We are very proud to have him at the helm of our inaugural production."

Derek Luke, Michael Pena, Andrew Garfield and Peter Berg co-star in the film following three plot lines, all converging on the themes surrounding the U.S.' war on terrorism.

United Artists was relaunched in November as a partnership among Cruise, Wagner and MGM after Cruise/Wagner Prods. ended its deal at Paramount Pictures.

"Lions" is the first film to enter production for the studio. The label recently optioned the nonfiction book "The Birthday Party," based on former Assistant U.S. Attorney Stanley Alpert's account of his 1998 kidnapping.

Saw it over the weekend and I left with a very blah feeling. A very very short movie, running time was only 90 mins. But the movie did make some strong points. The movie has 3 parallel stories but the only one that really did something for me was that of Tom Cruise because of his dialogues. I didnt know what Redford's as a professor wanted to acheive but Cruise was spot on. Streep was very disappointing, I have never seen her act this bad.

The movie wants people (students, journalists, etc) to step up and make a difference and make the right moves. I still think the movie could have achieved a lot more but in the end it was only a movie about topics of debate and nothing more.
