Here's a DVD Region Selector hack for the Philips DivX DVD Player DVP 5500s. I got it after our DVD player started acting up, and refused to play original DVDs:

Power up the DVD player.
Make sure there's no disc loaded inside the tray.
Then go to the System menu, select Preferences.
Enter 135566 with your remote and press ok.
A region code selection will appear. Press up or down to select 0.
Press ok and you now have a multi-region player.

Oz, do you know where I can get a divx firmware upgrade for my DVP 5500s? The player, as you will know, plays most things fine but once-in-a-while I get non-sync image/sound. So, it's worth a try. (Is there a way to revert the system to factory default incase all hell breaks loose after the procedure?)

I googled for it but think you might find better luck given your previous experience with some such...

Ak....i wish i have more substantial data to back up my claims but its late, so I'll just try and answer as best as I can.

We had a problem with the DVD player and did some fumbling around with the settings only to mess things up even more. There is, rest assured, a safety net in the form of a reset to factory defaults. Its in the system settings (this is where I get a little vague). The key is this...you have to search for these settings when there is no DVD inside the player, otherwise the settings do not show.

Also, I remember reading about how to do firmware upgrade for the player. There are many sites that help explain how this is done, but i'll try to recall what i read. You need to go to the official philips site, choose the DVD player (its not called DVP 5500s there...but some other model no..I think DVP 642), choose firmware upgrade...download the setup file, burn it onto the root of a DVD-R, put it into your DVD player, select the program you downloaded and run it. That should do the trick (haven't done it myself so not sure if it'll work). Again, my best best is for you to do some extensive online research before you try anything...there are hundreds of forums that explain the procedure.

Yep, that's the only thing I could come up with, if the firmware doesn't work, and hell breaks loose, reset to the factory defaults! Voila!
