I'm surprised we don't have a thread for this already. What's wrong with you computer geeks?
Here's something interesting (and disappointing) to get the ball rolling:
Quote
In the latest embarrassment to strike Sony Corp.,
the company acknowledged today (Wednesday) that many games designed for the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles are not compatible with PlayStation 3.
News of the problem follows the rash of bad publicity over production delays involving the device, consumer hesitancy over the company's Blu-ray high-definition DVD devices, and especially a recall of laptop batteries that the company had manufactured.

As Sammy mentioned, it is going to be fixed.
I dont see it as something that'd hurt the sales at all either.
My brother found the console in Malysia. Costs about Dhs 3200 for the 20 GB one, and 4000 and something for the GB 60.
Heard about a store in Saudi Arabia which apparently has one or two..
Sells for Dhs 8000 o_o;
Crazy shit.
I refuse to buy this console till the kickass games are released.

I dont really play console games anymore, although, the Wii sounds more interesting than this.

I was reading about Wii this morning. It's half the price of an X-Box 360. And Nintendo is trying to something different than a standard gaming experience.
I think it's wise to let things shake out. As Jelanda hinted, wait till the big title software is released.

Apparently, you can download games from Wii, which basically means you'll have access to tons of pirated nintendo games (including all the old games).
I havent bought a console in a long time, but I want to get this. I guess, I should get it online, its only 250 usd.

Wait until March next year when
PS3
floods the market.
Wii
costs would go down by then - unless you have an itch to start gaming right away. I dunno much about these things, but my brother (who's into gaming the way I'm into movies) said he expects
PS3
to be a much better, albiet pricier console. Maybe Jalenda/Sammy can do a comparison for us...

Today's Gulf News Business Section:
PlayStation 3 to be available in March
By Robert Ditcham, Staff Reporter
A visitror taking aim at an electronic target at Gitex.
Dubai: Sony's new video game console, the PlayStation 3, will go on sale in the Middle East in March 2007, the company officials confirmed to Gulf News.
The Japanese electronics firm sold 88,400 units of the PS3 in the first two days of the Japan launch, clearing out most stocks.
Colin Thomas, marketing manager for the Sony Gulf's PlayStation division, admitted a similar scenario could be on the cards in local stores.
"One of the reasons that we delayed the launch until March is to get larger quantities of day one stock, but the reality is we can never get enough to satisfy demand," he said.
Thomas could not confirm the expected volume of consoles assigned to the Middle East, saying the exact figure will not be known until weeks before sales begin.
Although official PS3 sales will not start until March, Thomas admitted Japanese units have already crept into the Middle East market and are being sold for up to Dh6,000.
Although a Dirham figure has not been release,
the console's 20 gig model is expected retail at $499
.
"On day one we like to focus on solid partners that we know will sell directly to consumers and not to look to make excess profits by re-selling them," said Thomas.
"We don't want people to be working with some unscrupulous traders....
"We're trying to educate people that if you buy before March 2007, it's unofficial and there are a lot of problems that go with that."

PS3 is available atm in AD. Costs Dhs6000. Total rip offs -_-;
ak:
It would be rather useless to buy the console now (PS3). It's SO expensive and the launch titles are incredibly weak. As far as I know, MGS and DMC4 will all be released in summer (june?), so that is when I'll actually get the console.
madali:
I think PS3 offers powerful online services this time around .. not sure about games being downloaded though. I think the sweet thing about downloading games on Wii is that we'll get to play the old classics on the console itself. ROMs on PC are a turn off for me.
shariqq:
shush wait till summer! That is when the price will get lower. March will witness the release of the PAL version I think. It is definitely gonna be better as there would be a lot less programming bugs.. but I doubt that it'll actually cost $499 .. that is just .. too little .. *sighs*
As for the Wii vs PS3
I suppose Wii wins *fun* wise.
I mean, I remember playing Mario Party last summer with my two brothers.. And I think I laughed to tears for 3/4 of the time o_o;; I've never had this much fun with a game in my entire life..
Soo that is where Nin wins .. it is heaps more fun ..
It's only that it not many games on it suit all tastes..
I never buy Nin consoles because the only games that I'll play on them are either Zelda and Castlevania IF it was released on it .. and that is why I only rely on the portables..
I'm getting a Wii tho because some of the DS games will be there (Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center)
So I'm gonna play something on it other than zelda lol
The PS3 is just .. mm .. pure eye candy mixed with hardcore game play I guess.. Along with a very huge and diverse collection of games..
Technically speaking, it is heaps more powerful that the Wii, and XBOX 360 too to an extent.. It is kinda too early for this generation .. I doubt that any game would show it's actuall power till after a year or so ..
I dunno .. I'm honestly a PS girl.. I've always disdained Nin consoles :x and so I get to be a pawn for Nin fanbois lol ..
But Nin consoles are fun.. really..
But it'll always be teh PS for me.
Sorry for the messed up reply, I'm half dead

What a horrible thing to say! No consol can ever replace the pure pleasure I had with NES and SNES.
Actually, with all the moving arms and shit, I think Wii is a good choice for my young brother, since I wont be playing much of it anyway. And its already cheap, so when it comes on stock, I think I'll just order one online.

I cant believe I bought a video camera a few months back for like 4500 dhs. With that money, I could have bought Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, but instead I bought an uber-camera that is basically just laying around unused now.

Haha. Thing is, my first console was PS
I used to watch my brothers play NES and Sega consoles but for some reason I never got interested in them to the point of playing.
I wasn't even interested in PS either.. till they brought an rpg called "thousand arms" and I got hooked..
I guess what bothers me about nin is that they dont have enough games that I like ..
i can't see why i should buy a console just because of one game that i like .. (game cube - zelda)
I'm getting the wii just because of the games that i mentioned in my previous post.
Nin is wonderful, don't get bothered by my comment!
and lol @ the video cam!
the 4500 would just get you a PS3 imo =p

I checked the demo they had at Gitex for the PS3, and it was amazing what this console is capable of. Unfinished game graphics (in play mode) were the best I've ever seen - think NFS:U2 title video quality while actual gameplay!! And integration possibilities with the PSP are also jaw-dropping: you can actually use your PSP as a rear-view mirror in a car-race, or the PSP screen as the map/weapon arsenal while your actual TV screen is the whole shoot-em-up view in a First-person-shooter. AWESOME!

King of Games in karama is selling the PS3 60 GB for AED 2900, with 2 controllers and 2 games free. It's for AED 2100 in Souq Al Wasal in Naif Road, Deira, even though the official launch date is the 22nd.
