The Go-Between (Joseph Losey, 1970)

When I was a kid, we had very little choice of TV channels. There were no cable or satellite channels, or torrent downloads, so our choice of channels could be counted on one hand, and on one finger if you were looking for English channels, and that one being Channel 33. At night, they’d always show one English movie (with Thursdays, being Bollywood night, the family’s favorite night). The reason I take a trip back in this memory lane, is because this film reminds me of those films. The films always felt cheap films and usually (I say usually, but I’m not really sure), the films were some old movie set in Victorian times.

“The Go Between” is decently critically acclaimed, so I don’t think it was a Channel 33 film, but set in Victorian times and it being about a boy taking messages back and forth between an upper class woman and her farmboy lover , it sure feels like one.

Man, those Ch33 days. But you can't deny them this: between Christmas and New Year, they showed the big Hollywood movies. I have watched Alien, E.T. and First Blood in the same Xmas week on Ch-33!

Well, before satellite tv, torrents, amazon orders, and such, films shown on Ch33 had a special value to it! It got us excited!
