I have a 1MB Al Shamil line.

Sad thing to say but I'd be happy to hear others facing the similar problems; I would hate to be alone in this:

1) When I use FTP, I can hardly transfer any data. Forget MBs, I cannot even write a 100kb file without getting timeouts. HTTP works fine though. Why?

2) The connection drops out and then reconnects again magically every now and then.

I'm using a Linksys Wireless Router.

I've tried everything: from a simple Windows FTP connection to SmartFTP.

And  your talking about your router's internet connection, or the wireless?
To narrow it down, the indicator lights on my Linksys router remain *green* but the wireless connection deteriorates and then it cuts off and comes back on in a few seconds.

Could it be a faulty router? It's been over 2 years since I've had this piece.

Could the FTP problem be a router problem? It's quite bad actually; I cannot even upload 5kb!

Routers last longer than that, especially Linksys ones. You MAY have a 3rd party application screwing with your connection. Are you using this with your laptop? If so, Dell (D600 series onwards) has the feature to shut down network interface devices to conserve power.

Search for Spyware in your system, or better yet, get Bit Defender, and check if there are anonymous connections being established from your laptop and eating up bandwidth. You MAY have open ports. If so, then get Hack This, and check out anon programs and remove the ones you're suspicious of. Try Googling those applications first!

Thanks, Oz, I'll try those things you suggested and report back if problems persist.

Btw, I'm using a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo (Centrino Duo) laptop so the power conservation feature can be ruled out.

sorry for the late reply.

Had a similar issue at work. The wireless didnt connect for more then 5 mins at a stretch. Was a bitch for file downloads. I suggest you update the drivers for your wireless. check on fujitsu siemens site.
