Fuhrer Ex (Winfried Bonengel, 2002)
A film that makes you fondly remember "American History X". But when Germany takes the neo-nazi subject material from the Ed Norton film, I guess, you can at least say that it belongs to Germany more than America. But "American History X" is nazis ahead of "Fuhrer Ex".
Set in East Germany during days when there was something called East Germany, two boys are bbfs. One of them gets sent to prison. He comes back, and claims he is a neo-nazi. A bit later in the film, both are sent to prison, and our non-nazi hero has to learn about life in prison. The neo-nazi friend tries to lure him into the nazi group, but goodie two shoes refuses. The prison film then plays as you are expected it to play when I mentioned "American History X". He will eventually find it appealing, because they would be the only ones to help him, and like all dangerous gangs and groups, the appeal is never the ideology, but the brotherhood that the group creates. It is the same with neo-nazis in the west and the same with Islamists in the east. Young people want to join something, and they prefer to join something that makes them feel a bit strong.
But all this we knew, and like the initial phase where the boy becomes a neo-nazi, you know that eventually, he'll also be dissatisfied and disillusioned with it, finding out the dark inner bellies of the cult. Just so the people that watch the movie don't go shave their heads after watching it. Which, by the way, I actually DID shave my head after watching "American History X" more than a decade ago!
