Pandora's Box [Die Büchse der Pandora] (Georg Wilhelm Pabst, 1929)
Watching silent films can be a bit fascinating sometimes. I feel weird watching it, as I keep understanding that I am watching dead people. "Pandora's Box" was released in 1929, this is 82 years back, which means, everyone involved in the film is almost certainly dead by now. I watch and realize how strange it is. These people are all dead. And there is something even more strange watching it. The realization that I live in an era that is less important that I sometimes think it is. A film like "Pandora's Box" was released almost a century back, but how far have we gotten? We added color and sound to our films, but otherwise, it almost seems the same.
I didn't like "Pandora's Box", not because it is outdated, but because it is modern. The story is melodramatic and soap opera-ish, and I forgive the story for it being an old film. Because while film might have been in its infancy, plot wasn't. The story is about Lulu, a young attractive girl, that is the cause of ruin to the people surrounding her, not true malice or intent, but that her allure and beauty causes people to think with their penises and vaginas instead of their heads. Did I say vaginas? Yes, because "Pandora's Box" is probably the first film with an openly lesbian character.
