hmm..interesting. i have similar issues but its not pertainent to emule. My whole internet stops....but i know thats cause of some stupid PC issues (i hate u SP2!)
i'm guessing your having similar issues. Did u try deleting the emule directory and starting from scratch ? Also, try to map to other ports, and not the defaults.
Do you have more then 1 machine at home ? test emule on another machine. See if its a machine problem or a router issue. I had some issues where i had to manually erase all teh log files on my router. Then it would work fine again.

I didn't know people still used eMule! I was using eDonkey and Limewire side by side, but eDonkey servers have had a clampdown apparently, coz' it doesn't run anymore, and prompts me to uninstall it saying it's an illegal software. Limewire is fine, but I don't get any music albums (in RAR or ZIP format), whereas eDonkey had it ALL!
Lemme try eMule too.

my emules connected for the past 2 weeks, no issues. I'm using a 512 too, with a linksys WAG54G....but i've change my ports. did u try on another machine as i suggested ?
P.S: WinXP SP2 has a hidden tcp connection limit. Try to reduce the number of simultaneous uploads / downloads. This includes other p2p (like limewire).

the upload thing is a per program specific thing. If you are using emule, its there in the options. The number of files as well as the bandwidth

just reduce the speed on emule. I think it sticks constant to 4 uploads at a time.
