The Trial [Der Process] (Franz Kafka, 1925]

A man is put on trial. We never know what the trial is about, what he is being charged with, or what he has done, and we're not even sure the accused himself knows. It doesn't seem to matter. Being accused is enough to throw someone in the process of bureaucracy and red tape, that is enough to change a person's life.

Kafka's "The Trial" is about the dull, automated, and complex machinations of anything to do with the government. To maneuver  yourself through it is not only difficult, but sometimes impossible, relying on people's advise and recommendations that offer a glimpse of hope, but never certainty. You either follow the procedures and suggestions and get spend years going from one office to another or stand firm and get destroyed in the process.

It is the first time I am reading Kafka, and it is both funny, and depressing. Life is not a fun place to be in Kafka's world.

Watch Welles' film adaptation of THE TRIAL.

It's perfect.
