Dead Space (Xbox 360, 2008)
Games are a bit depressing nowadays. "Dead Space" is a well-made game, but sometimes, I'm not sure how much fun I was having. It is just way too dark and serious. You are a space mariner, stuck on a spaceship, fighting aliens. The full ten or so hours of game play is mainly going from one dark corridor to another, fighting the monsters. And unlike FPS games of the 90s, "Dead Space" makes ammo really scarce. So, you don't even have the satisfaction of spraying evil alien scumbags with lead and going "AAAAAAAHHHH!!! FUCK YOOOUUUUUUU!!!!!" as you shoot bullets after bullets after bullets like a crazed maniac.
Instead, because ammo is hard to find and expensive to buy, you have to take care to make each bullet count. This makes it tense, but sometimes I think, do I WANT my games to be so tense? One of the reasons I always like FPS games so much, was because it allowed me to vent off some steam. It was great being able to just destroy bad guys/monsters without a care in the world.
The story is not very impressive and sometimes the repetition of the game gets tiresome, but overall, it is a tight, tense game, that is worth a play.
3/5
