Great list...and not to forget Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who's Three Monkeys drew a lot of praise both here and internationally and the always fantastic Kim Ki-duk.

Cannes: Tree of Life Wins Palme d’Or, Jean Dujardin Actor, Dardennes and Ceylan Share Grand Prix

Jane Fonda shows off her French and then says, “let’s cut to the chase.” DeNiro announces the Palme d’Or winner: The Tree of Life. It’s a popular choice in the press room. Producers Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner accept for director Malick. “Bravo” say folks in the hall.

“Terry remains incredibly shy,” says Pohlad, who told Malick, who had departed Cannes, that he might win something on the phone. “The Tree of Life was a long road. Winning this award tonight has made it all worthwhile.” Fox Searchlight is cheering too—and Summit’s Patrick Wachsberger leads the standing ovation, as he has sold territories around the world.

The Palais went wild for Jean Dujardin, as he won Best Actor for The Artist. He’s known as a popular comedian, so this role as a silent film star who can’t make the transition to sound is a departure for him. It was gutsy for Michel Hazanavicius to make a black and white silent film, which turned into one of the hits of the fest. The press room goes nuts. Weinstein Co. has the movie and will push it stateside. Because it is silent, it has a classic universality.

The Dardenne brothers, who have won the Palme d’Or twice before, take home the Grand Prix for The Kid with a Bike—the audience gives the kid and Cecile de France applause as well. Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan shares the prize with them for Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

Cannes Closing Night: Poliss Wins Jury Prize, Screenplay to Footnote, Dunst Actress, Refn Director

“Wow what a week it’s been,” said Kirsten Dunst as she accepted her Best Actress prize for Melancholia. “Thank you so much. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. Thank you to the festival for letting the film still be in competition. Thank Lars for giving me the opportunity to be so brave. It’s such a special night for me.”

Nicolas Winding Refn wins the director prize for Drive, amid huge applause in the house and the press room. He thanks Gaspar Noe for teaching him how to smash heads and Ryan Golsing (amid cheers) who wanted him to direct the film.

I had heard the Joseph Cedar had been asked to return to Cannes to accept a prize. He didn’t make it in time to accept the screenplay prize for Footnote. The movie was a well-written family drama about two rival academics—a father and his son. Sony Pictures Classics picked it up.

Overcome and breathy actress-director Maiwenn wins the Jury Prize for Poliss, a dense policier that won mixed response.

The Camera d’Or for best first film goes to Spanish-language Las Acacias directed by Argentinian Pablo Giorgelli in Critics Week.

Jury president Michel Gondry presents the Palme d’Or for short film to Cross Country by Ukrainian filmmaker Maryna Vroda.

Great...its good to see favourite directors (Malick, Dardenne) scoop awards. The festivals this year should have both these worthy films in their lineup.

Yes, those two movies and Melancholia -- looking forward to see all three. von Trier may have hurt his chance at the Palm d'Or with his Nazi jab last week, but with Tree of Life winning, it doesn't seem von Trier would have had it easy anyway.
