Winter Light [Nattvardsgästerna] (Ingmar Bergman, 1963)

A character talks about the passion of the Christ, and feels that the focus on Christ's pain is all wrong, as people discuss his physical pain. The man argues that the physical pain lasted only a few hours. But it is the mental pain that must have been unbearable for Jesus. He talks about his disciplines not fully understanding him, denying him, but the real pain was when he was on the cross, and feeling abandoned by God, doubting his whole life, and shouting loudly, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

It is silence that we struggle with. A priest in a small Swedish town struggles with his faith as he is faced with God's silence. He is sick, depressed, lonely (his wife passed away a few years back), and preaches to a mostly empty church. He finds no comfort in his religion and he practices it anyway. Faced with God's silence, he has his own silence, which he uses towards a woman that is smitten by him. He is cold towards her, not returning back her love. Maybe her love for him is like love for God. Love for God is a silent love, it is a love based on faith. For the lover, they have no proof or evidence that God loves them. But the lover loves his beloved through silence. Because they have faith that the love is in some way returned.

If it were all in the script, why make the film? - Nicholas Ray
