Laulu Laakson Kukista (Paavoharju, 2008)

What a strange album! A Finnish group that releases an album that seems to from all over, feeling like you have rubbed a brush over the different eras of music and they have sort of smudged together in this album, both contemporary and old, a sort of alternative timeline musical present generation.

1) Pimeänkarkelo: A very interesting beginning to the album. An outer-wordly instrumental atmospheric music with Finnish female spoken vocals, the unfamiliarity of the language adds to the strangeness of the song. 3/5

2) Kevätrumpu: And out of the introduction, the music suddenly turns from the quiet music to something with more energy, and suddenly there are beats to it and a chorus, and you realize you are listening to a unique dance track. 4/5

3) Tuosku Tarttuu Meihin: And the beats are gone, and we again have the similar feel to the song as the first track. The spoken vocals are back, over a music that seems out of place in 2008, the year the album was released. 3/5

4) Italialaisella Laivalla: Again, there is a shift. We move back to something that sounds like an actual track. There is a pattern here. With this track, it sounds like a romantic song from past eras. A man softly sings over gentle, subdued music. 4/5

5) Alania: Its another odd number track, so just a bit of instrumental between the songs. 3/5

6) Uskallan: Starts off with a baby crying, and then beats start, with singing and something majestic about the whole thing, shades of trance, but with tones that sound like the laughing of children, it’s hard to get.3/5

7) Ursulan Uni: 3/5

8) Kirkonväki: 3/5

9) Salainen Huone: 3/5

10) Tyttö Tanssiib: 4/5

11) Sumuvirsi:Oh, here is a break in tradition. So far the album has been what feels like real songs separated by short atmospheric instrumentals, but this one feels different. The music is feels very distance, with gentle female singing, and the sounds of birds in the background? 4/5

12) Bonus Track: 3/5

Average Song Rating: 3.33

Diversity: The songs both sound different from each other and the same. All tracks are obvious they are coming from the same world, but there are some strong diversity between them. 0.5/1

Atmosphere:I think if you listen to this album and get into it, you can feel a bit lost in the world it creates. 1/1

Listenability: As much as I like the album, it is rare for me to ever be in the mood to listen to something like this.  0.5/1

Average Bonus Rating: 0.66

Total Album Rating:  4 (3.99)
