Mirrors [Zerkalo] (Andrey Tarkovskiy, 1975)
IMDB Link

The more I watch movies, the less I seem to have patient for incoherent movies, no matter how well-directed and critically acclaimed it is.

“Mirrors” is gorgeously filmed, I will admit to that much, but it is unbearably boring. I think, as per what I read later on, the film is about a 40 year old man on his deathbed and reflecting back on his life. This means, that it is a mixture of different, seemingly unrelated events. There is no structure or line going from point A to B.  When I am watching a movie, I think for me every scene is important, and most of its importance is related to cause and effect. What was the cause of this particular scene I am currently watching and what is the effect it is going on to have on the next scene. With “Mirrors” I do not feel that.

It is a shame, because “Mirrors” has a stunning look to it. It is so visually well directed that it does not feel like a film from 1975. If only there was a well-structured storyline, I would have loved it.

2/5

Having not seen this (I should..its bloody Tarkovsky!), I would ask you to stay away from the very bad, very abstract and not even gorgeous looking Uncle Boonmee from last year, which this film sounds vaguely like.

Narrative is the poison of cinema...There’s nothing more beautiful than elusiveness in cinema.
