Awards Season 2010
«

Everyone everywhere comes up with a Top 10 list at this time of the year, but there is only one that I look forward to and its the one by BFI's Sights and Sounds Magazine. It's a very interesting list and its even more interesting to find last years very remarkable
A Prophet
, which topped their list for 2009, also in the 2010 list!
Quote
The Social Network has earned the rare distinction, for an American studio film, of topping Sight & Sound’s list of the best films of 2010. According to Guy Lodge at incontention.com, the full lists are only available in the print magazine right now, but will be online Dec. 7. This year’s Best Picture list is a Top 12, due to numerous ties.
1. The Social Network (David Fincher)
2. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
3. Another Year (Mike Leigh)
4. Carlos (Olivier Assayas)
5. The Arbor (Clio Barnard)
6. Winter’s Bone (Debra Granik)
6. I Am Love (Luca Guadagnino)
8. The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu (Andrei Ujica)
8. Film Socialisme (Jean-Luc Godard)
8. Nostalgia for the Light (Patricio Guzman)
8. Poetry (Lee Chang-dong)
8. A Prophet (Jacques Audiard)

And finally (for today), just for laughs, is Stephen King's Top 10 for the year:
Quote
Stephen King serves up a top 10 smorgasbord that encompasses a wide range of strange flavors, including a couple of things I have no intention of sampling. We’ll list them in backwards order like he does — presumably so his excellent top choices can erase the bad taste left in our mouths from the worst ones. There’s sometimes a line I have trouble crossing in a few of King’s creations and here I’ll draw that line between 8 and 9. Thanks to Marshall for the slashfilm link.
10. Green Zone – “one Iraq war movie that puts story and suspense above shrill outrage.”
9. Jackass 3D
8. Monsters
7. Splice
6. Kick-Ass
5. Takers – “This satisfyingly complex cops-’n’-robbers movie features great performances … and the armored-car heist is the best action sequence I’ve seen this year.”
4. The Social Network – “succeeds where Michael Douglas; Wall Street sequel fails.”
3. Inception
2. The Town – “Bad title, fantastic movie. … a strangely intimare film”
1. Let Me In

LOL @ Stephen Hawkings list. The Takers really?? And I hate sights and sound now because I will need to make space for Poetry somehow now during DIFF.

Just make sure POETRY is the first or second film you see during a day. It's long, deliberately-paced and totally worth it.
Also, not surprised to see FILM SOCIALISME on S&S's list; it's more accessible than some of Godard's recent works. I saw it at the AFI Fest, and there were only 15 walkouts, which is a miracle.

i love the title of his review..
"She became perfect in every area except life"

"There's this whole school of thought that movies are always so great when you're 10 or 12 years old, and the reality of it is, when you're 10 or 12 years old, you've only seen 100 stories. By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting."

As always, with minor exceptions, Ebert's list sucks.

Clearly the foreign press have no clue what is happening. They have nominated The Tourist as Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. I thought they were making a thriller. Ditto for Johnny Depp and Angie Jolie.
