Initiating something for fun. Let's find out who our favorite contemporary director is!

This is how it will work:

Step 1: Shortlisting 8 Directors.

Step 2: I will add up the pts for all the directors and announce the top-8. These will then be randomly placed in a draw (using randomizers to avoid favoritism) to begin the elimination game.

Step 3: Quarterfinals: at the end of it, we will have 4 directors.

Step 4: Semifinals: at the end of it, we will have 2 directors.

Step 5: Finals! And we have out winner!

Now all be sports, and let's get along doing this, for the fun of it!

Rules
- Everyone HAS to vote within the timelimit. If you don't, your votes don't count. But be a sport and make it count!
- Don't try to manipulate the rankings/competition by voting based on a possible outcome/future. Vote on each honestly. We're trying to find a collective favorite here.
- Participate and enjoy the results!

Step # 1.

Your choice of directors please! I'll use this post to tally everyone's choices.

Deadline: 23rd October. Or earlier if everyone has posted.

Rules
  • Everyone throw in names for directors they like. Minimum 1 & Maximum 3 Directors per person.
  • Each director should be given points by you, sharing out of 10 pts between them. Example: You could mention one director and give him 10pts. Or 2 directors with 5 & 5 or 6 & 4 or even 9 & 1 pts. Or 3 Directors. The total of the points you give them MUST add up to 10.
  • the Directors you name MUST be contemporary. The criteria for the purpose of this poll is:
    • Minimum 3 movies made (not counting student-films or shorts, etc).
    • Has to have his last release at least within the last 5 years (2006 or later as per IMDb).
    • Should have started career no earlier than 1990. (First widely seen movie should have been released in 1990 or later).
    • Must not have retired (and therefore, be alive!)
  • go with your gut-instinct of who you like. Participate, and enjoy!

Votes counted:

- Christopher Nolan: 13 points
- David Fincher: 13 points
- Ang Lee: 10 points
- Danny Boyle: 9 points
- Chan-wook Park: 7 points
- Quentin Tarantino: 7 points
- Wes Anderson: 7 points
- Darren Aronofsky: 6 points

- Paul Thomas Anderson: 6 points
- Michel Gondry: 3 points

Now these points mean nothing in the next round. Let the battle begin!

I like this poll a lot. Thanks for putting it together, Shariq.

Could you define what *contemporary* director means? You clarified they must have minimum 3 movies and have made a film in the last 5 years. This is fine.

But should they have *started* making movies? Shall we say starting 1990? That make it 20 years, which could be too much, or perhaps just right...(Anyone before 1990 should be disqualified? Example: Lars Von Trier)

You are right, I had not thought of that. Let's say the bulk of the director's work should have been post 1990. I do not want to include the likes of Martin Scorcese, Brian De Palma or Francis Ford Coppola, considering they would have qualified as per initial rules.

Revised rules to include: Directors who started making movies 1990 onwards.

Starting at 1990 is a bitch because I was not able to include contemporary directors I adore such as Michael Haneke. But it is what it is.

Here's my list: I can only think of one director who consistently satisfies me by making mainstream films that are not only entertaining but also artful and daring:

Ang Lee (10 points)
