This has LOTR vibes, even a Vigo lookalike, or at least that what I think I saw. It should be interesting.

Season 1 (10 one-hour-long episodes) wrapped a week ago. One of the greatest shows on TV in a very long time. HBO does it again.

I would agree with Oddy on this show. it is brilliant and excellent in every way. It is also heartbreaking, shocking, and groundbreaking. When you guys watch this show, don't get attached to anyone, cause everyone is a fair game  on Game of Thrones, and that is a part of its awesomeness.

My Rating is 5/5

Two hours/episodes in, completely hooked and floored. Everything else on my to-watch list will have to wait.

Medieval-fantasy has a flag-bearer in television with Game Of Thrones, an excellent series, or Season 1, since other seasons of the series are yet to air. Based on the first book of George R R Martin's Song of Fire & Ice series (4 of 7 books have been published), this is epic story-telling of the best quality. Much credit goes to the author for the rich text the series is derived from, but equal credit must go to the show's creators in adapting the book. The performances (down to and especially of the child actors), production value (costumes, locations, sets, effects) and the technical aspects (directing, editing, score) are top-notch.

Game of Thrones is targeted only at adults where Lord Of The Rings was for a wider general audience. The political game between the many Houses of Power, interplay between characters, threats and dilemmas that each of the characters face and the highly engaging main plot (struggle for the throne) just make this perfect for a TV series; a movie would not do justice to the various sub-plots and characters that are involved. Anyone who has not watched this yet ought to add it to their 'must-watch' list, and put it on a high priority. For a series such as this, it is best to stay abreast while each season is aired (One season being only 10 one-hour episodes), than to wait for the rest of the seasons and then watch them in one go. It will keep you from becoming aware of plot-lines and cast presence/absence of subsequent seasons that can be spoilers for previous seasons. Think of it as akin to watching Fellowship of the Ring as it released, without being aware of Gandalf the White in The Two Towers. Acquire it, watch it and let it sink and gestate while the adaptation of the second book gets underway.

A bit for the outstanding performances. While all are praiseworthy and none below par, two actors deserve highest praise. The obvious one is Sean Bean, anchor and thespian in such work. His Ned Stark, head of the Stark house, is the primary protagonist. The struggle for the throne revolves around his single-minded dedication to honor and servitude to the realm. In playing the part, Sean Bean brings a familiar face for the genre and also sets the tone for the show. The one other actor that really stands above the rest is the littlest of them: Peter Dinklage, the real-life dwarf who plays the stunted brother of the Lannister siblings. He owns his scenes with a great presence, a deep voice and the best lines. Being short of stature and reach, and therefore not the best at being a soldier, his Tyrion Lannister invests his mind in knowledge and strategy, making him the most insightful of characters. Here's hoping for an Emmy for his portrayal.

Game of Thrones is helmed by four directors over the ten episodes of this first season. While the first three directors spanning episodes 1 to 8 are excellent, Alan Taylor who helms the last 2 episodes does not do justice to the standards set by his three predecessors. The great writing, performances and production do make for good last two episodes and a jaw-dropping end, but the direction in episodes 9 & 10 simply pales in comparison.

All-in-all, a show not to be missed for those who enjoy great TV or cinema. Do note: the gratuitous nudity, gore and subject matter requires a strong-stomach and an open-mind.

My Rating --> 4.5 of 5

Watch if you have seen the series, or at your own risk.

Peter Dinklage, easily the best performance of the series, has been recognized as the Best Supporting Performance for a Drama series at last night's prime-time Emmy's.

Game of Thrones: Season 01 (HBO, 2011)

I remember how good the books were. Author George Martin hasn't finished the books yet, but the four I read were some of the best books I ever read, and certainly and easily the best fantasy book. Could the show live up to? How COULD it ever leave up to it?

But it does magnificently. My memory is not that great (that's why I review every single thing), so I do not remember the book in exact detail, but it feels right, very right. The characters seem not that indifferent than how I envisioned the characters to be, everything is played out perfectly, and once again, I was captured by the stories and events. And I was shocked and surprised, even though I knew what was going to happen.

I look forward to the rest. Winter is coming.

Even my wife loved it. She neither likes fantasy films, nor sword and sandal films, nor political films.

Midway through book two, and it gets more & more interesting for me, and more & more fucked-up for the characters.

Yes, my wife loved it too. And really, not enough can be said by how well Peter Dinklage embodies and translates Tyrion Lannister on screen. Pitch perfect.
