A Single Man
(Ford, 2009)
IMDB Link
It is set in a 50s and involves a homosexual and his passion for his lost love, but “A Single Man” is not really a gay issue film. George (Colin Firth) has lost his younger male love to a car accident and months later, he is still mourning his death. But it does not just seem like George is suddenly changed for the worse due to the death of his boyfriend, but that when his boyfriend was alive, it feels like it might have been only period in George’s life that had a meaning. There isn’t anything obvious in the film to support that but I had sense of the kind of person George might be. To me, George is one of those people who are almost always unhappy and lonely and during certain moments in their lives, there are instances of happiness.
Or not happiness, maybe just moments of living. The cinematography supports that. Most of the time we see George, the color tone appears colorless and dull, as if everything is washed out. But then there are moments in the film, such as talking to a girl, seeing a pretty girl’s sweet smile, watching the muscled body of a young man, that color seems to pour into the scene, making everything more vibrant and lively.
“A Single Man” is a movie about moments. Those few instances in our lives, when everything else that happened before it seems to have been worth it, when the now is suddenly meaningful.
“A few times in my life I've had moments of absolute clarity, when for a few brief seconds the silence drowns out the noise and I can feel rather than think, and things seem so sharp and the world seems so fresh. I can never make these moments last. I cling to them, but like everything, they fade. I have lived my life on these moments. They pull me back to the present, and I realize that everything is exactly the way it was meant to be.”

Reading about the film's director Tom Ford is almost as interesting as the film...

although i picked up the movie on DVD the other day from the airport but i haven't watched it yet.so today i arrived in Dubai,i went to Dubai mall and there i see the first Tom Ford store in the gulf! so i get in there and as you may know ppl who work at high fashion brands are really stuck up fags who look down on you and everyone else until you buy something from them..i can't stand those.
me: hi,this is the only Tom Ford store in the gulf right?
him: ya i think so...
me: yeah i have just seen the movie he directed, have you seen it?
him: you mean Single Man?
me: yes,such a great a movie! (lol)
him:
apparently, he didn't like the movie or something...
so i walk around in the store and it feels like nobody really ever bought anything from them.
me: i'm looking to buy a gift for my boss, are these the only wallets you have?
him: oh this is the only wallet we have (just one) are the rest are card holders (as if i can't tell the difference)
him: it's the last wallet we have,1700 AED something...
me: i dunno...you have something else?
him: you can buy him a perfume
me:no that would be so cheap
him: oh not from here
and he looks down on me like really get the hell out please...fuckin' psychos.
but Dubai is good man....it's kinda sad seeing so many buildings with "to let" signs on them though...everyone left Dubai or what? i'm not used to Dubai being empty everywhere...i went to Dubai marina mall and no one was there at all except some african psychos drumming with some english ladies.
i went to Dubai mall and to my surprise there aren't any teens over there! why?! all are old ppl...any mall should be packed with teens otherwise it's not a mall..

i enjoyed this movie a lot not because i can identify with the single man but because the single man is me and i can relate so much to this older/younger relationship.
i can't judge the teacher/student relationship in the movie because it's set in a different decade before i was born but in the "real" world during these times any older/younger relationship is very suspicious relationship.it's so sad because if i tell people one of my best friends is 16 they right away think i have a sexual relationship with him/her.life is so unfair i think i'm gonna be an emo soon..
on the other hand,i think this movie is over calculated and doesn't have a third act.
