As I've always said, and will say it for this movie's two parts too - they have the marketing (posters, trailers), etc) always spot on! If only the movies were as good.

That is where I don't see eye to eye with you my friend. You are too fond of the books that you are totally dismissive of the films, while I gave up on the book because I found them meandering and over-indulgent. I am not a big fan of the two first films, but Azkaban was the turning point for me, I found the book overstuffed while Cuarón's films was a very well done piece of cinema. From there I enjoyed all the films since, my favorite is still Azkaban but The Half Blood Prince is a close second.

Got goosebumps in one scene of the trailer: Ron telling Harry off about his parents. It's an excellent scene in the book.

OK, folks, here's a nagging question, and I need honest answers from you:

I have never bothered with ANY of the Harry Potter movies (or books), and I never felt the need to. But watching this trailer, I'm now having second thoughts. It doesn't help either that 7 years later, I'm still having severe LOTR withdrawal symptoms, and you can do a LOTR Extended Box Set DVD marathon watching session only too often. I need a seriously large dose of fresh cinematic fantasy and magic. So, shall I take the plunge and watch all HP films, in order to catch up before this new one hits the screens?

Much appreciated.

If you ask me I would say yes. But I know the folks in here will strongly disagree and tell you to read the books, because they don't care much for the films. I didn't care much for the first two films frankly (directed by Chris Columbus) , but I adored the the third The Prisoner of Azkaban, which ironically was the least successful commercially, directed by Alfonso Cuarón the director of Children of Men. For my money, the film is even better than the book which was frankly overindulgent but still great. Then I gave up on reading the book and just followed the films. Here is my summary:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , director Mike Newell: This was action packed and a very entertaining but not as good as the third.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , directed by David Yates: that was more somber and has less action, but I liked it more than the fourth.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, also directed by David Yates (who also will direct the two part final films): great opening 15 minutes, it has some very good action in the middle, but the rest is a high school drama. I liked it a lot, in fact it is my second favorite film in the series.

I would say, go for it, especially that you have a plenty of time to catch up with them, but don't dismiss them if you hated the fluffy first two films, and wait till you see the third.

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

I am obsessed with books, but I do not like Harry Potter. As mentioned elsewhere, stop being a troll.

Hey there Oddy, there was no cat-fight between me and my pal the Dude. He stopped pushing my buttons long time ago, and he rarely steps on my toes nowadays. It is true that our tastes diver and doesn't match and mix, but that is just the way it is.

Anyway, you should not put it this way ayaa vs. the Dude. It'll be more like ayaa vs. Shariq, Oz, KT, and Fizz, as my opinion is informed by the fact that I actually saw the last six films, while the Dude dismissal is more fundamental, as I don't know or think that he actually saw all the films if any.
