This movie is getting some excellent early reviews. This really is turning out to be an excellent year for good  commercial cinema!

Centred around child characters, JJ Abrams successfully channels classic Spielberg to create a highly entertaining summer blockbuster 'monster' thriller. Stick around during the credits to watch the final cut of the amateur film the young kids were making parallel to the actual events.

Silly film that would have been better off not trying to incite nostalgia for the work of another director and instead would have been stronger had it been set in the present and been a little more original. Was E.T., based in the 80's, set in the past? It didn't need to be because it understood the present so well. If the only thing Super 8 has going for it is that its a nod to Spielberg, than its all a bit pointless as a cinematic offering. The entire monster angle was also off and in fact just seemed to interfere with the potential that the drama with the kids had. J.J. Abrams seems to be at best an imitation director (his MI3, while good, was nothing more than a De Palma nod, ditto his New Age Godzilla wannabe Cloverfield). It's a shame because the performances, especially precocious Elle Fanning, are top notch, and really, the only reason to watch what is otherwise a forgettable film.

I'm with Oddball on this. I thought it was a wonderful movie that really rekindled the spirit of childhood fantasy and adventure, and what better way to do it than to tribute early Spielberg? I mostly loved it, its best parts being with the kids, and the less convincing ones being with the adults.

One thing I hated: the stupid lens-flares that kept ominously popping up every couple of scenes.

2.5 and easily forgettable? you are an asshole!

first, let me just say i have always thought J.J.Abrams is a hack and i didn't want or cared to watch this but eventually i did because of the Spielberg connection and i'm just in aw of how engaging it was...it's nothing ground breaking but it's a reminder of how good blockbusters used to be.

Super 8 has characters i care about, amazing performances and engaging story, something current summer movies lack which makes it better than ALL the comic book poop we had in the last decade.

and let me just remind everyone here that Fizz gave The Green i don't know what 3/5 and gave this 2.5...i hope you watch Avatar and Inception until your head explodes.

Honestly, Animatedude, get civilised or just get the fuck out of here. We don't need your kind of juvenile filth. One more, just one more condescending post from you, and I'll personally ban your sloppy leaky ass from this board.

You need to stop taking people's opinions on films personally. You didn't make the film (you are incapable of anything except being an armchair rant machine). If I didn't like it, deal with it rationally and constructively, not by blowing off steam like some military grunt. Again, its not a great film and yes, it is quite forgettable though I've given it credit in the same areas as everyone else. I'm glad it brought tears to your eyes and reminded you of your sodimized past.

A majority or a consensus means nothing to me. If your opinion about the director changed, good for you. I never had any disdain for Abrams and still don't, but you did and this has apparently given you newer perspective. Maybe that tells you something - you need to go back and revise your opinions on a bunch of other stuff. Also, I am not sure why numbers  and ratings really matter that much to you? Did your 5th grade maths teacher psychologically abuse you into respecting the sanctity of anything numerical? Honestly, I have to go on record and say this - you played the disappearing act on the forum a couple of years ago and it was a relief. You would be doing us more than a favour by repeating that noble behaviour.
