Ebert's X-Men First Class review is perhaps the shittiest one he has written in some time. It is fine that he didn't like the movie, but his writing has clearly deteriorated beyond recovery. Time to hang up those thumbs, Ebert!

X-Men: First Class (Matthew Vaughn, 2011)

"Listen to me very carefully, my friend: Killing will not bring you peace. "

The story is gripping because of the relationship between three characters.

The bad guy, Sebestian Shaw, who wants to start a nuclear war between USA and USSR, because he believes it will accelerate the downfall of mankind and cause the increase of his fellow-mutants.

Facing him are two different ideologies.

Charles believes in good, but Erik believes in eye for an eye. Their objective is almost the same, standing against Shaw, and stopping him, but their approach is different, and their personal feelings toward it is different. There are many other characters and side-plots in the movie, but it is this clash of ideologies in relation to adversary which is interesting. Charles' optimism and idealism comes from a life of comfort and richness, but Erik has a past of suffering and torture. It is easy to take the high morale end, when you had it easy. We see this in today's world too, armchair critics from first world countries judging the world from their relatively comfortable lifestyles.

I had some problems with the other characters (they were not interesting) and the final battle (waste of time and cartoonish), but the characters and the acting of Kevin Bacon, Jame McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender were enough to be a movie in itself.

4/5

what's so good about this movie?! it's just like all other X-men movies nothing special...the X-men movies are worse than the James Bond movies for being annoyingly inconsistant....watchable poop i can't believe the Kick-Ass dude trashed his portfolio with this junk but as long as the critics, geeks and Hollywood executives are happy then who am i to say anything?....

You are saying "so true" but I gave it a 4. You don't seem to understand certain genres for what they are. Comic-book movies are just that. If you don't like that particular genre, why do you watch it? I, myself, don't watch every single comic-book film, nor do I follow the new ones as closely as others. My level of anticipation for the new Batman film is almost zero, but i will probably watch it. However, its possible I won't watch multiple others that pop up every time.

But you watch every single one and constantly complain about them.

I actually quite enjoyed X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. It's silly and ridiculous, and totally in love with the 60s...but that is why it works. It doesn't take itself seriously and desires only to entertain. Comparing it to X-MEN and X2 is reasonable even though they are clearly vastly superior films. This new film is like their little kid brother: immature but having the same blood-type (unlike Brett Ratner's steaming turd X-MEN 3: THE LAST STAND).

P.S. Loved that cameo by you-know-who in the bar. Classic one-liner including the only expletive in the movie.

P.P.S. There's absolutely no life behind January Jones' vacant eyes. But, as the Brits would say, she is fit.

This and Fast 5 are the years two big fun films that got the entertainment aspect right without pandering to stupid or low brow tastes. If today was the last day of the year they might even make the best of lists

At least everyone else provides a review. Unlike your "insightful" trademark one word reviews.

+1. Captain America is fun too.

I really loved this film, and after rewatching X2 recently, I think I had much fun with this one, although I am not ready to declare which is better just yet. That being said, this one was not an out right blockbuster (it's ranked 17th in US box office gross, made $146m domestic, $350m worldwide, with 160$ budget). So T most it is considered a modest hit. You can compare the 5 X-Men films' box-office in the following link:
http://boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?id=vs-xmen.htm

So if we are to have yet another sequel, they might as well give it to someone like Vaughn who thankfully saved the franchise from becoming as atrocious as Wolverine and actually made the best comic book film of 2011. As for Box-office, may be we will have the same scenario as Batman, a modest hit withBatman Begins followed by a smash hit with The Dark Knight, and the most anticipated film of summer 2012 The Dark Knight Rises, where its midnight preview screening is already soldout 6 months before it opens.
