I just returned from a screening, and it's a lovely little film from the Coens: very well acted, darkly funny and technically very impressive.

TRUE GRIT is old-fashioned storytelling with the quirky Coen Brothers touch. It's very dialogue-heavy, and those who are not well-versed in the Americana of the West will feel left out. I enjoyed the laid-back quality of the film and the natural tension that arises out archetypal themes of justice and revenge. Then there are quiet, lyrical moments that feature Jeff Bridges (playing another magnificent variation of The Dude) and the fantastic new find Hailee Steinfeld, especially a wondrous ride through the prairie under a starry sky.

TRUE GRIT is a small film and its rewards come in small, gentle ways. Like Matt Damon's Texas Ranger and Barry Pepper's nihilist. Also, snakes!

Rishi, I see from your profile that you're still "Brett Ratner" -- time to hurry up on those posts, and "upgrade" yourself!

HFPA sucks, Rishi. They are a bunch of celebrity whores -- it's widely known within the film industry that the Foreign Press are unknown geeks who just nominate hot celebs just so they can have dinner/drinks with them!

ladies & gentlemen the first Western to top the $100 million mark since the 1990s and get this....the first $100 million hit for the Coen brothers.

really? none of Coen brothers hit the $100 million mark? that's odd.who knew a westren remake made by the Coen brothers would be at number one? i thought this is going to be another oscar whore that no one will see..

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher
