World's Greatest Dad (Goldthwait, 2009)
IMDB Link

2009 has not been the best of years for American films (and probably not for other industries either, but those usually become noticeable a year or so after their release), but I think I found my favorite in the most unlikely places. A Robin Williams comedy called “World’s Greatest Dad”. A title like that makes it sound like one of those horrible Williams family comedies.

But. Full Stop.

Not that a good movie having Robin Williams should be surprisingly. Even though Williams has a lot of incredible garbage in his filmography, none of us can really deny that he sometimes comes out as really good roles in great films. Unfortunately, he surrounds each good one with so much shit that going through his films is like going through a minefield of exploding feces and you can’t really depend on him.

I had heard passing good things about “World’s Greatest Dad” and hadn’t heard much about the story and I’m glad I didn’t, and I ask you to do the same. Don’t read any of the reviews of the film, because I read them after watching the film and almost all of them spoil a key shift in plot and tone during the film.

Just let me try to talk about the film without actually talking much about it. The film is a tragic comedy, shifting between scenes that make you want to laugh and make you cry instantly, and at times, you don’t know if you should do both or do neither, and it can be both REALLY funny and REALLY moving, and Williams is able to handle both perfectly. There is an important scene in the film that has Williams at his career best. No matter what stupid film he plays in after this, I can always tell people who bash him to watch this film, to see how good Robin Williams can be, when he has a good script to work with.

The film is unlike any that was released in 2009 and it will not sit well with most people. But those of us that find something comical about the tragedies of life and something sad about the jokes of life will find “World’s Greatest Dad” to be a big surprise.

“I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is ending up with people who make you feel all alone.”

World's Greatest Dad works for many reason, it is a well written small film, it is dark humor is actually funny, and it is drama is sincere and not fake, but the main reason why it works is Robin William's performance, he would fucking blow your mind, and you wouldn't believe he's the same guy who did Old Dogs after that. I will urge you guys to watch this film and forget  about any crap that Mr. Williams did for a paycheck. I also would ask you not to read any things that would spoil the film that way you would enjoy it even more. It is a little gem and I would give it 4/5.

i still haven't watched this yet but i like the crazy plot of his new movie...

"story of a newly-minted spree killer who decides to eliminate what he sees as the worst of American popular culture, beginning with a spoiled rich brat who's the star of a reality show and ending up on the stage of an American Idol doppelganger with an AK-47."

sounds like my cup of tea! laugh
