The Unusuals is an ensemble police comedy/drama aired on ABC for 11 episodes then it was cancelled, way too soon if I may say. It was not a procedural show like CSI or NCIS. It is about a group of corky misfit detectives in a New York precinct and their everyday adventures. They are following and solving crimes, but those take the backseat in this show. It is mainly about the detectives. Archetypes that have been seen before, but the difference is they were not weaved together in the same show, not as far as I know.

There is the rocky female detective (Amber Tamblyn), freshly transferred from the Vice department, to infiltrate the brethren and solve the murder of her new partner’s former partner. She comes from a very wealthy family but she is hiding this fact and almost ashamed of it. Her partner Detective Walsh (Jeremy Renner the star of The Hurt Locker)  is a quiet and cool cop who doesn’t say much and has an aura of mystery around him.

There is also the 42 years old black cop Detective Banks (Harold Perrineau from Lost) who is convinced that just like his father and grand father he would die at the age 42. He is obsessed about his safety, child proof his house and desk, wears his bullet-proof vest everywhere, and would not take any risk no matter what. Ironically his partner Detective Eric Delahoy (Adam Goldberg) discovers that he has a tumor in his brain and he doesn’t want to get any treatment, he thinks he is a dead man walking so he throw himself in danger without any regards for his partner’s fears and reservations. There is the now Born-again Christian good cop who is running of his dark past put the past is catching up with him, and the egomaniac cop who is referring to himself in third-person and no one can stand him. Those are the main players, but craziness also branch out and you get criminals and victims who are as crazy and more.

All this craziness makes for a very good comedy, so if you are interested in an off-beat very short lived show that won’t take much of your time I say check out The Unusuals. My rating 3.5/5.

Cop shows are so boring usually, but your description makes it sound interesting.

It is interesting, different, and it is short. You can see the pilot and judge it from there. I will miss this crazy show.
