Sealab 2021 (Reed & Thompson, 2000)
IMDB Link

"I have the strength of a bear that has the strength of two bears! "

“Sealab 2021” is made by the guys that made “Frisky Dingo”, an animated show that I found strange and funny. “Sealab 2021” was their show before “Frisky Dingo” so I have watched their work in opposite order. With this particular show, they follow the animated style of some other Cartoon Network adult cartoons, by taking footages from 60s and 70s cartoons and using them again in a different setting.

“Sealab 2021” uses the footages and characters from a 70s animated show called “Sealab 2020”. The original cartoon seems to have been a bad, short-lived serious animated show about characters living in an under the water station called Sealab that, every episode, has to deal with some kind of environmental issue. With the new show, a year has passed, and the characters are now a bit fucking insane. There is no continuity between the episodes in new shows as at the end of the each episode, the station itself is sometimes destroyed or characters killed, but everything is back to normal by next episode. Well, I say normal…but nothing in this show is.

The comedy is experimental and sometimes post-modern, and by which I mean, the show will make a joke, then joke about making the joke, then joke about that too. Or having the whole show be a comedy, except one random episode, where everything is played straight, without any jokes. Or another, which just shows the station and has dialogue, but no animation at all.

Strange and quirky, but amusing enough to be enjoyable.

I like the Star Wars inspired poster.

If you can't convince them, confuse them.
