Soderbergh's 1989 debut film
Sex Lies and Videotapes is the film accredited for the rise of independent cinema in the 90s and marks the shift for Sundance festival toward becoming the most important and influential film festival in the US. This film is held highly in every critic's favorite film list, and it started the now parodied tiresome clichés of Indie films; talky, corky characters, revolves around dysfunctional families or a relationship that's falling apart, not much happening, etc.
The film tells a simple story of people’s tallking about their sex life or the lack of it, and really the title does sum up all what this film is about. It is a well shot and acted small film that moves swiftly and doesn’t drag. I didn’t know that Andy McDowell is capable of acting. But at the end of it the story really was not that interesting to me, or rather I didn’t care much for the characters portrayed in the film. May be I didn't get what’s all the fuss about, so I would only give it
3/5.
