Finally saw this movie on DVD... Seems unreal that someone who made Lagaan, Swades, Jodhaa Akbar, would make something like this.
I agree he wanted to make a light romantic comedy, but the rule for any comedy is that it has to be short. 13 songs? Not appropriate for such a genre.
Priyanka is so brilliant, it is difficult to describe her work. Playing 12 characters, all of Gujrati background, yet enacting very different personalities and looking distinct as well, she is the true hero of the film. Her comic timing, the little nuances to each character, how she connects with the audience in such a short time (each character gets a few minutes, and a song each! ouch!) is truly remarkable.
Harman cannot act. Yes he has a decent presence on screen, dances really well, but doesn't have the capability to compliment a competent actress like Priyanka on screen.
The subplots and side stories only slow the movie down, making it difficult to watch. The end, does not do justice to the build up and seems rushed.
What would have worked is, that this should have shot as a 14 or 16 episode show, weekly 20 minutes, where each star sign is given adequate development. The audiences could have voted their favourite, TV channels would make SMS revenues, win win situation for all.
What turned out, was a long drawn out, too tiresome comedy which didn't work. Priyanka's brilliant performances went unnoticed because of the poor commercial success of the film, which was truly unfair.
