The Ben Stiller Show (FX,1992)IMDB LinkBen Stiller gets a lot of bad rep, but I’ve always held his back. He whored himself out for a few years and starred in like six shitty movies every year, but I think he knows funny when he tries. While a lot of people hate “Zoolander”, it is one of my favorite comedies. And of course, his “Tropic Thunder” was fantastic. And let’s not forget “The Cable Guy”.
But before all that, he had “The Ben Stiller Show”, a sketch comedy with thirteen episodes. Verdict? Not good. Not good at all.
I mean, I guess I should give old Stiller some slack, it was a sketch comedy by an inexperienced, new comedian and made for MTV. But I won’t give him some slack.
The sketches are too long, he repeats the same sketches several time in different ways, and most are parodies of significant pop culture events in the 90s, but jokes are usually done in obvious manner.
I do think the show was getting better in its last few episodes, and maybe if it had a longer run and Stiller was more confident, the future seasons would be better. A lot of comedy shows need some time for it to get into shape, and it is possible if Stiller had a bit more time to play around he could have done a much better job, but he did not get a chance.
The most annoying part of the show was that between the sketches Stiller talks to the camera, to the cast members, and a weekly guest. Stiller makes fun of himself a lot or writes those parts in a way where the cast members and the guests make fun of him, but it is very forced and annoying. He has shitty guests one and acts like they are awesome people.
But it is still somewhat amusing to watch everyone really young here. Ben Stiller, Andy Dick (hate him), Janeane Garofalo (cute), and even a bit part by then completely unknown David Cross.
