I love Jim Emerson. He's a got a subversive taste in films (anyone in love with Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" can have a beer on me) and his prose is straight-up but perceptive.

Emerson is guesting on rogerebert.com - the website - while Ebert recovers from surgery.

And now this:

Quote
Kevin Smith will be a guest critic on Ebert and Roeper while Roger Ebert recovers from complications in surgery.
[/b]

Again, I don't like Smith. There's a conflict of professional interest here - he's a 'filmmaker' and now he gets to do active duty reviewing films? Scorcese was a great critic as was Bogdanovinch. If these greats go back to film criticism I will welcome it. If they continue making movies and reviewing at the same time, I will not be displeased. But something about Kevin Smith sends my warning bells into overdrive.

Smith is a first rate writer...honest. I've read his work (in comics) and they are staggeringly good in their prose.

And yet, I don't see him as a critic either - he has that high school leftover flavour to him. The kind that makes you say 'Grow up already!'.

Maybe he has grown up...With Jersey Girl I think he proved that. With Clerks 2 he also proved that he is a studio whore.

trust me guys on this, even Kevin Smith haters say that they love it when he speaks about movies and stuff.if he plays it right, it could be a brand new career for him as a critic.and he could be just the next Roger Ebert.i bet he's gonna have a full time job as a critc soon.mark my word.

and iam not even gonna compare him to Roger Ebert.trust me guys, you are so gonna like him as a critic.actully, iam preparing myself to read his quotes which will be all over the internet haha.

BTW, someone tried to ask him about his thoughts about Superman Returns and he said something like "i prefer X3!"

and umm for how long  Kevin Smith will be a guest?

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

Well... we'll see.

To be honest, I can take or leave his movies, but I do like the guy.

Clerks was a bit of fun...

Mallrats indulgent tedium...

Chasing Amy... Starts out interesting  but slips into emotionally dumb territory (his heterosexual best mate thinks that he should make love to him... yeah right...)

Dogma... Enjoyable

Jay and Silent Bob... more indulgence

Haven't seen the others...

Apparently Jay Leno will be doing the second week after Kevin Smith, who will guest appear on the show with Roeper next week.

I vote for Uwe Boll for Week 3 - infact he and dummy Roeper would make a perfect couple!
