Not surprised, the film was really made on a shoestring budget. Paramount is taken the credits for it, but they refused to pay for it, it was financed independently then after it was wrapped up it was delivered to Paramount as a finished product for distribution. Anyway, Christian Bale have done small films before, and played second fiddle as well, but this one gave him the Oscar that eluded him his entire life.

"There's this whole school of thought that movies are always so great when you're 10 or 12 years old, and the reality of it is, when you're 10 or 12 years old, you've only seen 100 stories. By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

The Fighter (David O. Russell, 2010)

I wouldn't mind if an award organization, maybe the Oscars, just decided to give Christian Bale an award for best actor every year, by default. He is easily the best actor of his generation and I would probably say, even better than many of the actors from previous generations, that usually get a lot of acclaim, and the reason is that Bale acts so differently in each of his movies. You watch him in "The Fighter" and you feel like you have never seen him before, he's so vastly different than anything he has previous acted as. Batman or Bateman, Bale is always new and different.

Already I'm won over by Bale by this film, but it's also about boxing, which since I watched "Rocky" has always been one of my favorites genres of films. Boxing films are never only about boxing but always about the struggle of man, somehow, a last refuge of masculinity in today's world, where we can watch it and know it is a melodramatic look about a character's difficulties in life, but since it involves fights instead of words, it never feels sappy.

"The Fighter" is like that. It is about a man standing up for himself, trying to be his own man, separating himself from the pressures of family, and achieving success. But it tells it with punches.

4/5
