Look at life and films, differently...

« on: December 21, 2008, 03:56:PM »

"New York" is a contemporary story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers but these events can change our lives... forever. "New York" is one such story of 3 young friends whose beautiful lives are turned upside down by larger events beyond their control.

Starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan

The trailer I saw was really crappy, it gave away the whole story and it is totally unbelievable.

New York starts off well, building its case, a curiosity... the camaraderie between the friends is fresh, fun to watch... then the problems begin. The movies' negative side is not as strong as its positive side... Katrina does not emote appropriately, John is wooden... Neil and Irfan do a decent job.

The end of the movie was very weak, ruining the efforts of the build up.

2/5

Sandeep my pal welcome back! I read your review and noticed that the math doesn't add up in it. If the positive outweighs the negative, shouldn't your rating by higher than 2/5? Or do you set your scale differently? By the way, I didn't see the movie so I am speaking in general here.

Hey Ayaa, how are ya? When I wrote that the movies' negative side is not as strong, what I meant was the negative shades in the characters and the story that the movie tries to convey, but fails. On the lighter notes, the movie does ok, but the tricky darker side it didnt handle well... apologies for the confusion...

funny that Indian filmmakers have a good grip on comedies and sappy drama, but they are yet to perfect their craft when they deal with dark subjects. Of course I am talking in general and about mainstream Bollywood.

You are right, we are strong on emotion, on comedy, but dark and negative still  needs polishing...
