Hot Fuzz (2007)IMDB LinkI can not talk about “Hot Fuzz” without first bringing up, “Shaun of the Dead”, which was made by the same team. The reason “Shaun of the Dead” worked so well as a horror-comedy, was that it mocked the material. It was still a zombie movie, and it had many qualities that made zombie movies so good, it just happened to also be funny. There never was a feeling that the filmmakers were making fun of the zombie genre, which is a something the spoof genre has fully lost the concept of.
“Hot Fuzz” does exactly the same thing, but with the buddy-cop genre. Simon Pegg (main actor and writer of both movies) himself says of his spoofs, “They lack the sneer that a lot of parodies have that look down on their source material. Because we're looking up to it.” And that is what is so obvious here. A lot of characters, situations, and action in this parody can easily be transferred to a real action movie, without anyone knowing something is up. That’s what makes it so special. The characters that exist in this world do not pretend it is a comedy.
That attitude is carried throughout the movie process. The editing is fast-paced and quick, there is use of shaky-cam, lots of intense close-ups, and some good action. And it turns out to be the funniest comedy in a long, long time.
I think I’m going to take a brave stance here and say it is the best policy-comedy I have ever seen. That includes classics like “Naked Gun” and “Police Academy”.
And to top it off, here are some random extra things I liked that may mean nothing to anyone else,
+ Lots of cameos from some of my favorite British comedians, that guy from “The
Office”, that guy from “The Extras”, and that guy from “Knowing Me, Knowing You”.
+ The song “Village Green” by “The Kinks”, which I’d never thought I’d see in a parody buddy-cop movie
+ Lots of gore!
+ “Forget it Nick... it's Sandford.”
Another great one comedy from Wright/Pegg team, and one the few which the movie is much, much funnier than the trailer makes it out to be.
