There Will Be Blood (Anderson, 2007)

Is there any doubt that these men (both actor and director) are genius!
Quote
Below you'll see actor extraordinaire Daniel Day-Lewis pulling his whole amazing chameleon-like schtick and acting the shit out of P.T. Anderson's upcoming movie, THERE WILL BE BLOOD. To be honest, I'm not sure if he's actually in mid-act or not (or if he's even on set, for that matter... I don't know of the movie shooting in Beverly Hills). The pic hails from People Magazine so it's not too unlikely that it's just a street paparazzi photo. And I wouldn't put it past Day-Lewis, who plays a turn-of-the-century Texas oil prospector in the movie, to wear that suit on his own time. THERE WILL BE BLOOD is penciled in for a 2007 release at the moment. Anderson's script, which is based on Upton Sinclair's novel/expose "Oil!," is, by all early accounts, awesome, and I don't have much trouble buying that.

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting."

I saw this last night, and wanted to post immediately before I go see it again. (Trust me, if it ever comes out there, you will want to see it again.)
"There Will Be Blood" is PT Andersen's crowning achievement: it's unlike anything he's done before, and unlike anything we've seen before.
A visual knockout, it's a powerful psychological drama about greed, faith and above all...misanthropy; strange but also completely compelling. This one is really going to take you through the ringer...I didn't know what to make of it -- especially that odd ending. It's one of those rare instances of movie-watching where despite my reservations, it's impossible to dismiss. Superficially a period-piece, this is a film resonating with questions about what People are (Evil and Good); and what America was and still is (Blood for Oil.)
Primitive yet contemporary, dramatic but also rip-roaringly hilarious, "There Will Be Blood" seems to thrive on it's eccentricities and is absolutely fucking fascinating.

If it were all in the script, why make the film?

None whatsoever. Although there is strong violence, no nudity is present, and the stabs at Christianity have more to do with the hypocrisy of organized religion.
Enjoy. This will be some experience!

Daniel Day-Lewis
was phenomenol. Apart from his performance, there was not much in the movie itself - which I found, relatively, quite mediocre. But his devillish performance raises the entire movie to a different level.
In comparison,
No Country for Old Men
had amazing performances, and was an amazing movie in itself too.
There Will Be Blood
proves (to me atleast) that
Paul Thomas Anderson
is not much of a director as much as a person who can extract great performances. His writing is not up to the mark, even the dialgoues (including the 'milkshake' one) are sometimes spellbinding only in Daniel Plainview's mannerism of delivery rather than the words themselves.
No, not the best movie of the year. Yes, easily the best performance of the year (from the ones I've seen). The Oscars this year were, for a change, quite well deserved!

There will be Blood
There will be blood
is an astonishingly vivid, unflinchingly evil and sometimes, in transmitting to the screen the intensity of a raging mad man, unabashedly uproarious. In the final analysis, it may be described as the descent of a man into madness. In actuality, it is the story of a man already mad in his gleeful quest to fulfill an insatiable greed; he knows and understands his drive may alienate all around him, so he establishes a persona of normalcy. This is how the film begins - he is a 'family man', wants to help people, cares for his workers. As the film proceeds, first over a few years, then across many decades, the barriers start to break away and what is left is ferocious animal who, in isolation, no longer feels the needs to confine himself to what 'these people' want.
The film itself is a sweeping tale, and very American in its themes of greed, capitalism and religious zeal. The visuals are sprawling, framed in broad, beautiful strokes, the sets entirely realistic and believable. This is one of those films where even the child actors perform with conviction. Anderson's visuals gain a poetic momentum, elegant and sublime in an assured way. It imagines and uses Kubrick as its inspiration, and the moody, picturesque settings engulf the viewer. The creepy, baroque music, credited to Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood, sensationalises these visuals and adds to them great texture - fear and uncertainty during the opening scenes; and anxiety during a fantastic scene where oil and fire gushes forth from the ground in a shower of black rain. The last act takes a unexpected, somewhat bizzare turn, though partly credible within the confines of the film itself. It may reflect maturity on Anderson's part as a writer, but may leave others (myself included) scratching their heads for sometime letting what has just transpired grow on them. Whatever the case, it is undeniably visionary. If for no other reason, "There will be blood" should be watched for its audaciousness and daring.
