Bollywood at Toronto Film Festival

Kabir Khan’s Kabul Express has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film being produced under the Yash Raj banner stars John Abraham and Arshad Warsi in lead roles. The film is being considered as an important breakthrough in the Indian cinema by the Toronto selectors. Kabul Express will have a red carpet presentation for ‘Artistic and Daring Cinema from around the World’, which will be a Special Presentation Program.

In Kabul Express, John Abraham and Arshad Warsi play TV journalists who go to Kabul post 9/11 to meet Taliban. The film is actually based on Kabir Khan’s experience in Kabul when he was shooting a documentary film there. Kabir Khan says that it is a great honor for his film to get selected at the biggest festival in North America.

Along with Kabul Express, Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna will also be screened at TTIF this year. Although only films making their world premiere are screened at Toronto Film Festival, however, the organizers are making an exception for KANK which will have a worldwide release a month before the fest.

WTF??!!! and WHY is the exception being made?  Shocked
Maybe the programme director is Karan Johar's boyfriend.

UTV signs deals worth $ 37million with Fox, Sony and Overbrook
[/b]

UTV has now planned to go international. The production house has signed up deals with International production houses like Fox Searchlight, Will Smith’s Overbrook and Sony Pictures for a total commitment of $ 37 million. This is the largest Co-Production deal out of South Asia as of yet. In a deal with Fox Searchlight, UTV has announced a co-production of the film I Think I Love My Wife, starring Chris Rock. Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and Peter Rice, CEO of Fox Searchlight announced this in Los Angeles on Friday.

The second deal UTV announced is a $ 30 million co-production agreement with actor/producer Will Smith and his production company Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment, for films to be created and distributed worldwide. This was announced in New York on Saturday by Ronnie Screwvala, Will Smith, James Lassiter, Smith’s partner at Overbrook Entertainment and Amy Pascal, Chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. The two-picture deal emerged from a Sony arranged visit Smith and Lassiter took to India in February 2006 to explore co-production possibilities, when they met with media titans and key members of the creative community.

"India is one of the most remarkable places on Earth and its motion picture industry has always fascinated me", said Will Smith. Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV states: "UTV is focused on collaborating with like-minded partners like Fox, Sony and Will Smith to produce entertainment for global audiences. For UTV, these projects are a big step in reaching key North American markets and expanding our presence globally. UTV has made the biggest commitment by any South Asian media major to international co-productions and we will continue to lead the way in this regard."

Sushmita Sen who will be playing the role of an Expat in the film has to leave for Argentina soon to shoot with Gere, however she has yet to recover from her neck pain.

Now Irrfan Khan joins Angelina Jolie with A Mighty Heart

Just yesterday, we reported that actor Aly Khan is all set to foray into Hollywood with Micheal Winterbottom’s English film ‘A Mighty Heart’. Now buzz is the actor Irrfan Khan is also roped for same movie.

Irrfan plays a pivotal role in the film, which is an adaptation of the book ‘The Mighty Heart’ that is based on the life of Daniel Pearl. Angelina plays Mariane, wife of Daniel Pearl. Dan Futtermann will be playing Daniel Pearl while Irrfan will be seen in role of a captain who was a part of the investigations.

The film was supposed to be shot in Pakistan. However, Irrfan has been apparently denied a visa to Pakistan. So buzz is that Angelina will come down to India to shoot for the movie which is slated to release in 2007.
