Umrao Jaan is gonna suck so bad, it's gonna rip everyone's brain out through their eye-sockets.

Edit: Split Topic for discussing this movie independently.

Dont be so pessimistic Shariq, I think Umrao Jaan might turn out ok, Abishek is a good actor and he might just pull this one off. J.P. Dutta used to make excellent movie until he went all patriotic. I think this script gives him a different subject. His Ghulami, Yateem, Kshatriya were good movies if not great. He went koo koo after Border.

I agree with KT (again) Shariqq... get the scepticism out, and give JP DUTTA a chance... Shabana Azmi and Abhishek bachchan, with Suneil Shetty, might just bring out a good performance from Aishwariya...

KT, Sandeep : Kshatriya is one of my favourite action movies out of Bollywood. And I really like Hathyar & Yateem too. But my problem with this movie is two-fold: WHY remake a movie when it was perfectly done the first time 'round? And for God's sake - if even then you are remaking it - cast proper! Casting Ash in Rekha's role has more chances of backfiring than working. Meena Kumari's Pakeezah & Rekha's Umrao Jaan are the most acclaimed tawaif roles done yet. This role needed a better actor. Well, atleast Ash looks the part...

WHY remake a movie when it was perfectly done the first time 'round?

The same reason why King Kong was remade by Peter Jackson. Maybe J.P Dutta wants to make it his way. I see no harm in it. In fact he is raising the bar for himself coz comparisons will be done between the two and he is ready to face that.

And for God's sake - if even then you are remaking it - cast proper! Casting Ash in Rekha's role has more chances of backfiring than working. This role needed a better actor. Well, atleast Ash looks the part...

I agree with you that casting be an issue here, but v all know that if a director wants to make Ash act she really can. See Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Choker Bali and Raincoat, IMO she really acted well in these movies. The bigger the star cast, the better she performs and as we know J.P. Duttas' movies have huge stars in them. J.P Dutta might just pull the rabbit out of his hat here.

...Raincoat, IMO she really acted well in these movies.

Naheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Tongue  Yes, I'll still give her the benefit of the doubt because of the Director, and I will watch this movie without prejudice. But still, I am as against it as I was of Tobey Maguire playing spidey.

p.s. : That's one too many Spiderman references today. Will stop on it now.

The Diwali/Eid of 2006 promises to be a bonanza for Bollywood buffs, what with all the biggies scheduled for release. J.P.Dutta’s ambitious Umrao Jaan was supposed to release at the same time along with Don and Dhoom 2. However, now it seems that the release date has been postponed from October 20th to November 24th. Apparently, the makers wanted to avoid a clash with Don and Dhoom 2.

“Umrao Jaan will dispel JP Dutta's image of a men's director” – Shabana

Shabana has added one more feather to her crowded cap. This year's International Gandhi Peace Prize has gone to her. The prize has earlier gone to the likes of Nelson Mandela and Coretta Scott Young. "I'm quite quite honored," said Shabana from Jaipur. "I believe they had me in mind for this award for some time in recognition of my work with slum dwellers."

Shabana is all set to fly to London later this month with husband Javed Akhtar later this month. "It will be given to me at the House Of Lords in London 26 October. And I won't have Javed miss this moment in my life for the world," says the diva of histrionics who has three films lined up before the end of the year.

"There's Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Manish Acharya's The Contest. Both by new directors, both in a lighter vein and great fun to do." She's all praise for Acharya. "He's a walking talking encyclopedia on Hindi cinema. I rate him as high as Farhan Akhtar."

But the first Shabana starrer out will be J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan where Shabana plays Aishwarya 'Umrao' Rai's mother. What excites Shabana is the historical significance of the part. "My mother has played Umrao's mother in Muzaffar Ali's film. And now I'm playing Umrao's mom in J.P. Dutta's film. Isn't that neat?"

Neater still is the fact that mom Shaukat and beti Shabana went shopping for Shabana's costumes in Umrao Jaan. "Since my mom and I have a fair knowledge of fabrics and clothes we had great fun dressing up my character."

Shabana feels Umrao Jaan will dispel JP's image of a men's director. "JP was in despair, surrounded as he was by women on the sets all the time. But you know what? They'll stop calling him a men's director and start calling him a women's director after Umrao Jaan."
