Look at life and films, differently...

« on: October 05, 2008, 01:24:PM »

Aditya Chopra's 3rd directorial venture, after the mega successful Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ - running in a cinema till date, released in 1995!) and 'Mohabatein', released in 2000.

Story is supposed to be about SRK, who is 40, single, living in London, a loner, and returns to India to get married... New comer Anushka Sharma will star opposite him. Vinay Pathak is also in the film.

The movie is scheduled for release on 12th December, 2008.

I attach a poor quality poster for you to view!

The Times of India has a full page poster for it today. SRK has a total geeky look with specs, mouch and a plain white shirt. Guess he plays an accountant or some government employee judging from the clothes he is wearing. Can't see the girl but this could possibly be what the Yash Raj banner needs.

I'm not watching this movie no matter what. Haven't seen a complete Aditya Chopra movie, and don't intend to. DDLJ is the only notorious movie I have ever walked out of midway.

Rab Ne Bana di Jodi - A movie I was really looking forward to, but all the reviews surrounding it cushioned the blow when I walked out of it yesterday...

What was Aditya Chopra thinking when he wrote this story? Why has he reserved all his creativity for his productions and abandoned it for his 3rd directorial venture? What was supposed to be a breath of life for Yash Raj Films turned out to be the final nail in its coffin...

Without going into too much detail, the film gets your attention in the first few minutes and the proceeding scenes. As the plot is revealed, it makes you wonder how daft the director thinks the audience is these days...

The songs are good, much better to watch and will grow on the audience. One song especially is a surprise and is the highlight of the movie.

Post interval, the film gets dragged, the plot rests on wafer thin ice until the final scenes of the movie, which are well shot and edited, but I didnt connect with them at all...

SRK gives a great performance as the quiet, shy, introvert Surinder. His 'hep' avatar leaves much to be desired and goes way over the top sometimes. The new girl Anuskha Sharma, makes a confident debut and looks very nice on screen. Vinay Pathak plays the eccentric supportive friend very well...

The music of the movie is good, perhaps the only saving grace of the film. It cant be compared to melodies of his earlier films, or some of the recent YRF productions, but its decent.

Aditya Chopra, the name that used to make people sit and up and take notice will  now make them think whether he infact was a one movie wonder. DDLJ was immensely successful for many reasons, granted he can't be expected to recreate the magic with every film he makes, but what was he thinking? A half baked story with glaring loop holes, this movie makes mohabbatein more watchable!

Watch it because you should watch it once, but dont say you haven't been warned!

Excerpts from an interview with SRK about the movie:

Luck plays a significant part in everyone's life. It has played in your life and mine too. I want to know how luck has affected Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?

Adi says that this film is made by 'Rab' and not luck. I just called him and told him that should we just postpone the release of our film keeping in mind the situation in Mumbai right now and he said, "This film is made by 'Rab' and we will let it release on time as planned. All what is happening was made to happen. Rab knows what He is doing". I never planned to work with Aditya Chopra and he never planned to make a film. It all just happened. The reason I did Rab Ne... is because Raju Hirani's film got cancelled. So Adi came to me and said that he had written a film in 12 days and wanted me to be a part of it. I agreed and we finished the film in 47 days. Rab Ne is 20% better than what we planned to make. It's all in Rab's hands!

You have people in this profession whom you trust and have made a difference in your career, YRF. What say?

Rab Ne... is the seventh film I've done with them. The last six films with YRF have never failed business wise and keeping in mind audiences reactions. They've all loved it. We started with Darr and ended with Chak De India. Now it's Rab Ne. People keep blaming us that we make similar kind of films. I doubt that. When you look at Veer Zaara, Darr, DDLJ and Chak De, the roles ranged from a 65 year old man to a villain to the romantic hero to the patriotic Kabir Khan. To have these four variations is doing something different and not similar. But the good thing about me and YRF is that we never try and work together. We always try and tell a story together which we love to tell. 90% of my stardom is because of YRF. Hopefully Rab Ne will take it to 100%.

LOL so true... that was my main issue with the movie, which pretty much is the basic premise of the movie... but I wanted Yash Raj to do well because they have made some good movies and their recent 'bad' batch cost them a lot of money and reputation...
