A bad trailer, a hot actress and a decent actor.

Woh Lamhe

Quote
Woh Lamhe

The much talked about film on the alleged real life equation between Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi finally makes its presence felt through its first trailer. And the first aspect that attracts you about the trailer is the soothing and melodious track 'Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai' that plays in the background. Bhatts have always had a smart sense of music in their films and this one too sounds promising. KK crooning the 'Oooou' way reminds you of 'Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai' from Gangster but nevertheless he does an excellent job.

And while the soft number appeals to your ears, your eyes cannot afford to miss the gorgeous Kangana Ranaut who plays an actress in the film (the character based on Parveen Babi). Waving off to her fans, enjoying media attention and posing for some exquisite photo-shoots, Kangana as Sana Azim looks absolutely ravishing.

Shiny Ahuja plays filmmaker Aditya Garewal (the character based on Mahesh Bhatt) directing Kangana for shots. Despite the stories of their off-screen tiffs, the couple shares a sizzling onscreen chemistry. The duo promenading around a fountain or Kangana in a bathtub full of rose petals add to the rich visuals.

The trailer subsequently shifts towards a serious note with Kangana venting out her frustration, hospital scenes and tears flowing. The movie supposedly has a tragic end. The promo ends on some intense close up shots of the forlorn duo.

Woh Lamhe means those moments. The film talks about…
Moments of fame
Moments of love
Moments of pain
Moments make a lifetime
For everyone who has loved and lost…

What is 'Woh Lamhe' about?

In the glitzy entertainment capital of Mumbai as dusk descends, famous actress Sana Azim (Kangana Ranaut) slashes her wrists in a hotel room, in an attempt to kill herself. When this news reaches film maker Aditya Garewal (Shiny Ahuja), he is devastated. Aditya has been searching for Sana all over the world. Sana who was intensely involved with Aditya, had mysteriously disappeared from his life without any explanation, three years ago, only to surface now in what could be the last moments of her life.

As Aditya waits outside the ICU in a death watch situation, praying to be reunited with her, he is hurled back into the perfumed days and champagne nights of his memory, wherein Sana Azim played the role of both, lover and mentor to a struggling Aditya.

Everything was perfect, except for an enemy which lurked in the shadow, waiting to destroy their love. An enemy which neither of them saw till it was too late…

When Aditya realizes that the only way he can save Sana from total devastation is to take her away from Bollywood and the vested interests that threaten to destroy her completely, he runs away with Sana putting his career on the line. Those moment lived in the sanctuary of their love are like an oasis in the desert.

Until one day, suddenly, she disappears, leaving him with unanswered question. Why did she leave at the very acme of their love, when there seemed to be hope? What pushed her to attempt suicide? Will be finally be able to piece together the puzzle that has been haunting him and almost destroyed him? And most important of all, will be reunited with his love?

Nope it is Mohit Suri, the guy who did Zeher and Kalyug. I honestly have not bothered to watch any of the movies that have come out from the Mahesh Bhatt camp including Murder. But I think I will attempt to watch Gangster after hearing only good things about it.

But I think I will attempt to watch Gangster after hearing only good things about it.

My review, written on 21st May '06:

Best of the year so far? Yes - easily. It has a few issues, so let me get them out of the way first:

Gangster has some shoddy acting by it's main character, the girl at the crux of a Love Triangle. She has a bad accent, and a stunted way of speech. Her arms are around one Emraan Hashmi who does lip-lock. But with all your pre-concieved notions of him, he is not easy to dislike. And the pay-off for that is pretty nice. And as is usual for Bollywood movies, the movie does go through some unnecessary melodrama, but thankfully these are just three short ones.

What really is good about this movie is the writing. Director Anurag Basu has written the movie with a very clear idea about what he intended to depict. Yes, we have a gangster, we have foreign locales, and we have a "sexy pair", but the movie religiously sticks to its story-telling without once stopping to over-sell violence or sleaze. The whole narrative plays like a solo violinst playing through a single-long peice with its share of happy/sad portions and a few crescendos at the right times with some recurring themes. So much so that it is easy to be sucked into the whole flow and go along with where the director takes you.

Anurag Basu is good. His second movie (I thunk), but he clearly has his own language of cinema. From the shot-arrangements and camera angles to the score and songs, this man plays it like he cares for his movie, and not for the producer's coffer. He tells us the story mostly in flash-backs - but with decent inter-cuts to make it not entirely linear. The movie moves along a relaxed yet fast pace. It reminded me of cruising in a luxury car at 180Kmhr. You are speeding, but very comfortably.

The movie follows the story of one-girl (Bar dancer, yawn!) who a Gangster falls for, rebels against his gang, goes on the run, then puts her away safe and stays away to keep her safe. After holding-on for years she, in her loneliness, falls in love with another man - just when the gangster comes back. Clashes, loyalties, retribution, betrayel, vengeance.

Shiney Ahuja shines (sorry, couldn't resist) as the titular Gangster. His going from unspoken emotionless man to unspoken jilted lover to unspoken "karma-yogi" works very well mainly for his intensely mascuine persona. How good is he as an actor will take something against his type to prove. But he fits here perfect, and within the world of this movie, the man is like the writer's imagined.

Watch this movie if you can catch it sometime soon. It's worth atleast that much respect.

‘Goal’

Okay, we all know by now that John Abraham has been finalized to enact the role of a footballer in GOAL, directed by Vivek [CHOCOLATE] Agnihotri and produced by UTV.

The makers will be using the services of Andy Ansah, the football choreographer for most feature films and commercials made on the subject of football, including the celebrated Nike campaigns and the acclaimed European film of the same name. Andy has worked with the best football players in the world, both past and present, including Pele, Ronaldinho, Beckham…

Location scouting has also begun in right earnest and the crew has zeroed in on Spain and U.K. to shoot the game in world class stadiums.

Says Ronnie Screwvala of UTV, “We are working 24/7 to ensure that we do justice to this amazing concept.” As a matter of fact, John has always been a football freak and the passion for the game took him all the way to Germany this year to see the World Cup Finals.

Celina Jaitly, Koena Mitra, Riya Sen. That's too many titty-babes for one movie to make it any good.

Kareena and Aamir finalized for Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo
[/b]

Kareena is on a high these days. So giving a fine performance in Omkara, she has signed on for Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo. The film will be an adaptation of Ismat Chugtai’s book of the same name. The interesting part is that she will be paired together for the first time with Aamir Khan.

This will be Kareena’s second period film after Asoka. Kareena feels glad that she has got an opportunity to play such role at this phase of her career.

She has already started reading Chugtai’s period love story to understand her role and to get into the skin of the character. Previously she had worked with Mani Ratman for Yuva and is he is currently busy shooting for his forthcoming film Guru. Lajjo will go on floor in January and will be out in mid 2007.
