After checking out The Vampires Diaries I can say that it is totally a different animal, the only thing in common between the two shows is that they both revolve around a good vampire in love with a human girl, but the rest is totally different. The Vampire Diaries is a teenage drama/romance in the same vane of Dawson's Creek, if that is your cup of tea. I personally have a soft spot for sappy teen romance, and I found enough in this show to enjoy. I will keep watching for now till further notice.

I have never watched an entire episode of Smallville, for unknown reasons that show was never appealing to me.
