Alan Ball
, creator of
Six Feet Under
, returns to HBO with a new series based on the novel series Southern Vampire by Charlaine Harris. The series follows Sookie Stackhouse (
Anna Paquin
), a telepathic barmaid who finds comfort in the company of vampires since they have no brainwave activity for her to read. She and her brother Jason were raised by her grandmother after losing their parents in a flood and she tries to keep her telepathic ability a secret. Thanks largely in part to the creation of a Japanese-made synthetic blood called True Blood (where the series takes it name) vampires have make their existence known to the world. Sookie works at the bar 'Merlotte's' which is owned and operated by her boss Sam Merlotte who has a secret of his own.

Sounds extremely interesting. Guess I'll pick it up once it starts.

We have more posters. The pilot was interesting and the show holds a lot of promise, lets see is Alan Ball can take this show to similar heights like in the past...

I will decide to see the pilot depending on how much of Anna Paquin we get to see -- all of her?

If it were all in the script, why make the film?

None of her, but a lot of someone else.

I just saw the pilot. It's very underwhelming, especially when you consider Alan Ball is behind it.
TRUE BLOOD
is essentially an R-rated version of the clever
ANGEL
series, set in a mid-Western town. There's an obvious racism theme, with (fictional) vampire citizens standing in for oppressed Blacks and Homosexuals (Ball is the latter); but is this enough to carry a whole season?
The dialogues are witty and the show's masterstroke is casting the extremely extremely hot Anna Paquin in the lead role. However, none of these elements can make up for what are average/irritating supporting characters and a general feeling that
TRUE BLOOD
has been done before, and much better.
I can't see myself returning for additional episodes. If others here continue with it, let me know if it improves.

Yah I wasnt too impressed either. I expected a bit more from Alan Ball. Maybe I will give a couple of episodes more before i give up.
The supporing cast just doesnt have the appeal.

It was unbearable to watch it, but Anna Paquin in the nude made it worth my suffering.
Re. the episode itself...let's see: your grandma dies, you can't cope with it, so you take drugs and try to heal yourself by fucking; by having a vampire screw you, then request him to bite you and drink your blood? Thanks, Alan Ball. I'm glad you're not running for President.
