The Wire: Season 2 (HBO, 2003)

Like movie sequels, Season Two's have a lot of weight to carry: remaining true to the last season, while also offering something new. S2 of this great show is continuing to do just that.
This seasons focuses on the problem of Prostitution, while at the same time furthers the existing storyline of the Aaron Barksdale crime syndicate and the growing powers of his right-hand man Stringer Bell. And, concurrently, Jimmy NcNulty's crusade against his bosses who put him on a boat in a shitty police department, plus the new lives of his previous colleagues, some of whom are doing well while others -- like him -- not so good.
The writing is superb again, and the attention-to- character and setting detail is, again, phenomenal. You truly believe you're with those foul-mouthed Polacks in the bar drinking shots of vodka for breakfast!
I found myself laughing so hard at the jokes, and seeing how the writers set up the troubles of the story through simple devices: like this guy who owns a Port and paid his local pastor to put up a glass window of him and his longshoremen hauling containers; the next day the local police sergeant comes with a miniature of cops for the glass window; the pastor tells him to discuss the matter with the Port owner and fight it with him; the bastard sergeant goes over, gets insulted, then enlists help from the City officials to begin fining the Port owner to get back at him. This stirs up all sorts of shit because 13 dead immigrant prostitutes where discovered in the Port owner's lot. Oh, those good Christians!
I'm half-way through, and it's clear this is going to get even better. I love love love this show.

If it were all in the script, why make the film?

You asked for it...But honestly this is a kick ass show. I have no clue how the writers have managed to keep the story so tight. None of the episodes have been fillers, everything seems to be connected with main story of the Barksdale's Family and Stringer Bell.
