I think the fact that there were no movies after the third film and this is a completely new direction (CGI) will make this film a success. Kinda like Superman.

Anyone else get the feeling that is trying too hard to be dark?

It's scheduled for release March 30, 2007.
Some key points about the film that writer-director Kevin Munroe said about the film...
1) Although the film is entirely CGI, Munroe revealed that it will act as a sequel to the first *two* live-action 'Ninja Turtles' flicks.
2) Shredder will not be the villain in this 'TMNT' movie ... but he will play a role in the franchise should any future movies be made.
3) At the outset of the movie, it appears that Leonardo has somewhat gone off the deep end and become a loner/rebel who has renounced his position as leader of the Turtles.
and lastly it seems "none of the Turtles will be voiced by celebrities". Splinter, however, will be voiced by Mako of 'Conan the Barbarian' fame.

If it were all in the script, why make the film?

Yupp, they are. Read the
entire first comic here
- it's a very fast read, and shows the gritty nature of the original idea rather than the pizza-skateboard one we came to be aware of from the "Hero" Turtle animated series.
Btw,
Splinter
was not the main villain of the TMNT series (in comics). He was just a catalyst.
...and I like it too!!
