Dark Knight

I read this book two months ago - and this has to be the best Comic-book/Graphic Novel I have ever read. I haven't read as many as my other friends, but reading and finishing
Dark Knight Returns
just makes one realize how good the form can actually get.
I had been blown away by
Alan Moore
's
Watchmen
already, and that book sets a very very high-standard. But familiarisation of the characters in Batman's universe, and then seeing them twisted rotten in such a gripping way in
DKR
is an experience beyond.
I should be getting my copy of this over the coming weekend. Anticipation is running high.

Adnan...now that you're David Fincher, don't you think you should stop posting?
(I know this is pointless banter, but I just noticed and couldn't resist....)

I am confused about my reaction towards this comic. I mean, I am many grips with it, same grips that I have with many american comics. I mean, Robin, as a 13 year old girl, just felt a bit rushed, unnecessary, and really not part of the reality of the story. The baddies came and went too fast, without making much of an impact. Plus, if this was a movie, the editing and pacing would have been horrible. Finally, I was really getting tired of all the pro/antibatman debates. I get it, I get it, no need to repeat it so many times.
Still...I honestly cant stop thinking about it. There were scenes of extreme coolness, that just worked perfectly. The dialogues worked best when they were inner thoughts, and the best scenes were with little text.
Gordon faced with a thug,
"I think of Sarah"
"The rest is easy"
Fuck, that was the kind of writing I loved.
Or Batman going after Joker, "Today there will be no hostages. "
"Today, I'll be taking no prisoners".

Mad, I'm glad you took time to read this book. Those lines there are classic Miller. Pick up the equally astounding
Batman: Year One
to get more a feel of what the man was capable of before he became the guy who made
Sin City
.
To appreciate the greatness of
Dark Knight returns
you would have to understand the low point mainstream comics had reached by the mid 80's. 'Holy Batman', with a big 'POW' was what readers were being bombarded with. In the midst of this came books like
Dark Knight
and
Watchmen
. They did to comics what
Citizen Kane
did to movies - revolutionized every aspect of the medium - from storytelling, to art to pushing the limits of violence and brutaliity. It was like releasing an independently made Bond film using all the people and resources available to the MPAA and MGM (Batman afterall was owned by DC and there was only so much you could do with the character without alienating fans).

How are the comics now? I wouldnt mind more violence and death, I'm pretty shallow when it comes to those things.

Comics in general are a lot better these days, but for some reason there still exists this clear distinction between mainstream and non mainstream. Your Xmen's and Spiderman's have actually dumbed down quite a bit because of this (since they have a stronger, more defined core audience), to the extent that they are not worthy of investing time or money into. There are however alternatives with more violent, darker comics. Marvel for e.g. has a division (known in comics industry speak as an
imprint
)called
Marvel knights
which publishes mainstream comics, such as
Daredevil, Punisher, Wolverine
etc that are geared towards more adult themes such as prostitution in Daredevil or schizophrenia in Punisher. There is a downside to this however; most of the times these books are limited runs, which means that unlike regular ongoing titles, they will last abt 10 or 12 issues (a year), with the exception of Daredevil, which is their only regular title (and isn't available in this sorry country) and has been running since 1998 when
Kevin Smith
kickstarted it.
There is also a division called Max comics, another imprint of Marvel, which like DC's seminal
Vertigo
is regular mature comic titles that are both non-mainstream and non-superhero. None of these I have unfortunately read, but I have heard really good things about them. They are usually violent, contains nudity and foul language, are dark, funny and perverse. There is a great ongoing series at the moment from Max called....get ready for this,
Marvel Zombies
. I'm reading this at the moment and its bloody good! (review soon...).
Batman, part of DC comics, fares well, but I am not a regular reader since their storylines go on for year and in multiple books so to understand and read one saga will cost you 65 issues and a good portion of your life.
