Nightbreed (Barker, 1990)
IMDB Link

The worst thing about horror movies is that there are so few different sub-genres of them. We have the slasher, the Asian-ghost story, zombies, and maybe vampires, and that is about it.

The cool thing about “Nightbreed” is that is different. A guy is having dreams of a place filled with monsters, and when he dies, he is taken there. It seems there is an underground city full of monsters, but they are kind of good guys, since they are hiding from the white western man, who have destroyed them due to being different.

This sounds like an after-school special on tolerance and everything, and that’s there, but told fro ma horror perspective. The monster makeup is extremely cool to watch, while some suck balls, there are a few surprises. It is not like the monsters are sweet misunderstood creatures, they are freaky looking, borderline evil creatures, and they kill in gory ways.

Won’t frighten you, and it is more silly than scary, but worth a watch if you like pre-cgi monster makeups.

The TV show "Futurama" has a running subplot based entirely on this idea. A homage, no doubt.
