Porky's (Clark, 1982)IMDB LinkIf this was the 80s, and I had just seen my first teenage sex comedy, I would have been bored of the genre. To me, neither the 80s teenage sex comedies nor the 90s American Pie revival of the genre are any good. The idea of them always sound funnier than when I watch them. Teenagers in high school obsessed with sex, with lots of dick jokes? Right up my ally! But I watch it, and realize it’s not up my alley at all, because it is filled with the kind of characters who I absolutely hate.
“Porky’s”, from what I read about, seems to be a cult classic of 80’s sex comedies. It is about teenagers in the 50s wanting sex. That’s it. Not only is that the plot, but it is also the whole joke. If I was in their high school, I would not have hang out with the characters, as they are uninteresting, morons. I and my friends were also preoccupied with sex in high school, but interest with sex does not mean that it replaces a personality.
Here is an example of a joke. A female couch is nicknamed “Lassy”. A male couch takes to the boys locker rooms, she is turned on by the smell of the locker room, has sex with the male couch, and then moans like a barking dog (thus the nickname). This goes on for like five minutes with her barking and then cutting to students hearing this and laughing.
Having a dick joke does not necessarily mean the humor is crap, but at the same time, having a dick joke alone does not add anything to the humor if it’s not done in the correct way.
And anyway, you know the movie is no good when the director’s two latest projects are called “SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2” and “The Karate Dog”.
