Maniac (Lustig, 1980)
IMDB Link

“Maniac” is a cult horror from the 80s, about a psychotic serial killer that murders women, scalps them, talks to a mannequin, and other weird things that crazy people did before there was internet for them to just log on and flame others. In the 80s, when someone was into scalping women, they couldn’t just google “scalping women gallery”. No, they’d have to put on some pants, go outside, and make it happen.

It’s all from the point of view of the serial killer, so we are not following cool teenagers in a shed being chased by a killer. We’re following a maniac killing prostitutes and such.

There’s actually not much of a reason to watch this. If this is your first serial killer movie everywhere, you might shit your pants, and go, “Wow, I’m watching a movie from the POV of a serial killer!”, but the truth is, there are many other better movies which do this. The one you SHOULD watch is “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”. And if you have watched that, and want to try something new, just change the brightness on “Henry” a bit, and rewatch it, it’ll still be more worthy than “Maniac”.

An underrated serial killer movie is "Kalifornia," which features one of four of Brad Pitt's finest performances (you know the others.) The film is ruthless, bleak, yet totally mesmerizing.

Lustig went to found Blue Underground, a very profitable DVD label that has released cult movies such as Cronenberg's "Fast Company."
